Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

wantamad,

It would appear you were following an outdated wiki page.  The one you want is here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg

First of all, you can delete the "lo=..." line from your rc.conf.  It's not needed anymore.

Start by installing netcfg with pacman.  The next step is changing "NET_PROFILES=(wlan0)" to "NETWORKS=(wlan0)" in rc.conf, and adding "net-profiles" to your DAEMONS array.  After that, you will have to create a file in /etc/network.d.  In your case, the file will be named wlan0 because that's what's in your NETWORKS array (you are free to change that name though, of course).  Here's the contents of my file.  It probably won't work for you without modification, but it's a starting point!

/etc/network.d/wlan0

CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="wlan0"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SCAN="no"
SECURITY="wpa-config"
IP="dhcp"
TIMEOUT=40
WPA_CONF=/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

You can try to start your new profile manually with the command "netcfg2 wlan0".
Good luck.

i followed your instructions and i got this ---> :: wlan0 up  - Wireless association failed.                            [FAIL]

i saw this (# wpa_supplicant -d -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0

if i understand correctly, it seems that its not trying to authenticate to my hidden wireless ap since it keeps on saying ssid mismatch. i know the wireless works fine cause if can see my neighbors ssid.

this is my /etc/network.d/wlan0

CONNECTION="wireless"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SCAN="no"
SECURITY="wpa-config"
WPA_CONF=/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
DNS1=192.168.0.1

TIMEOUT=20

i tried it also with IP="dhcp" and removing the 3 options below IP="dhcp".

i made sure my wpa_passpharse generated the correct psk and double checked my wpa_supplicant

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
eapol_version=1
#ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1
network={

}

my rc.conf now shows NETWORKS=(wlan0) and net-profiles has been added to DAEMONS. i booted to windows and installed the drivers for my usb wireless adapter (Trendnet TEW-424UB) setup the wireless profile and it connected to my ap. i dont know what else needs to be rectified... any ideas?

Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

Hello,

I *think* I found out why you are getting the SSID mismatch errors.  According to the doc I found, you have to set "ap_scan=2" in wpa_supplicant.conf when using a hidden SSID.  If netcfg still doesn't work after adding this, then I'd suggest unhiding the SSID and getting things working that way.  When you can connect, then tackle the hidden SSID.  Divide and conquer, fight one problem at a time.

Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

I think I've got the same problem, only my AP doesn't hide it's SSID... I'll post my config files after a get some sleep:P

edit: I'm way too tired... I made a mistake with the wpa_passphrase command. I escaped a character from the passphrase that shouldn't have been escaped... Now off to bed!

seems like its trying to authenticate but failing. i tried broadcasting my SSID like what you suggested but it seems to be authentication issues. i tried the wireless usb again on windows just to make sure it can authenticate and it does work there. is there something wrong with my wpa_supplicant.conf?

so the ssid problem is gone. now it seems to be authentication... ideas? i really appreciate your help. thank you for spending time in helping me smile

Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

wantamad,

Could you please try the following:

sudo wpa_supplicant -dd -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0 -Dwext

I just read the ndiswrapper documentation.  It says to use the wext driver with WPA and newer version of ndiswrapper.  -Dndiswrapper is only used with older versions.  I'm hoping that's what's causing the error message, "Driver does not support WPA."

still a no go buddy... ive been searching google and comparing my wpa_supplicant.conf and it seems to be correct. i restarted the router and made sure i have the correct password in there and tried connecting using windows to make sure its working. im wondering if i should just get another wireless adapter or maybe wirless card this time? what are your thoughts?

Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

Instead of wpa-config, you could also try

SECURITY=wpa
KEY="???"

Where ??? is your raw passphrase.

Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

hey iphitus! thanks for your reply. i tried what you have suggested and received the same error:

wlan0 up - Wireless association failed. [FAIL]

for some reason its not authenticating...

Re: help with connecting to ap with wpa-psk1 with tkip

I had a similar problem with the WLAN at my university(wpa, eap)
Setting SCAN="yes" did the job for me.
