[SOLVED] Clock wrong. UTC vs local time

Hello all,

I made a mistake during installation and chose UTC instead of local time (or vice versa, I can't remember). Anyhow now my clock is wrong. I figured that this was an easy fix and went into /etc/rc.conf and changed from UTC to local time, then restarted. Unfortunately the clock didn't change at all. So what am I missing?

First off I need to know how to determine whether I use UTC or local time, and then how to make the clock display the correct time. I am almost positive that I used local time in the past with success. I have a couple computers and one uses UTC and one has to have local time so it gets hard to remember what is what.

Anyhow if anyone could help me get my clock fixed that would wonderful, it throws off my Schedules Direct Mythtv guide as well, hence the real need to fix it. Thank you for any help.

I think the best solution is to resort to the Network Time Protocol, so your time will always be accurate wink

if you aren't dual booting with windows, you want UTC. If your clock is still off, check rc.conf to make sure your timezone is correct, and if it's still wrong, just adjust your BIOS clock accordingly.

Of course, you can also use the network time as mentioned above =P

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to wait so long to respond, I sort of forgot about the thread.

Anyhow I installed OpenNTPD and now my clock is working just fine. Thanks for the help.

After reading this I found that ntpd -pq worked whereas ntpd had not.

Really ?? you will bump a 3 year old thread for that?
