USB 2 External hardrive drops off

I've got a really irritating problem with a new external 1TB USB drive and, or my new USB 2 card. After a short period of operation it seems to drop off the system. I have the drive connected to a USB 1 port at the moment and it works fine. Bought a new cable when the problem first occured, just in case, no help.

when it drops off, /dev/sdc.. devices also all dissapear. If I cold re-start the drive and  PC all comes back fine.
I've been googling, and there do seem to be interamittent problems with external USB drives going back to the start of the USB 2 spec, and more recently various suggested solutions with udev rules both in the arch forums and elsewhere. I tried one of these with no success. As the drive seems to work fine on USB 1.1 I don't  think the problem lies in this area, or in the appropriate modules not being present.

The Arch install was a fresh FTP one about a month ago, and is base only, test is not enabled, no X or desktop stuff at all.

Re: USB 2 External hardrive drops off

This obviously seems to be where the problem is...

EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
usb 3-6.1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 3-6.1: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 3-6.1: device descriptor read/64, error -110

usb 3-6.1: device descriptor read/8, error -110
usb 3-6.1: device descriptor read/8, error -110
usb 3-6.1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 3-6.1: device descriptor read/8, error -110
usb 3-6.1: device descriptor read/8, error -110
sd 2:0:0:0: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdc] Result: hostbyte=0x07 driverbyte=0x00
end_request: I/O error, dev sdc, sector 443458855

The part that interests me is the last line... I would be thinking a bad sector on the disk. However you say it works fine on USB1.1 which I wouldn't think would be the case if it was a bad sector.

Just to rule it out, have you done fsck -c /dev/sdc1 on the device?

Re: USB 2 External hardrive drops off

Just Identified why the drop off is happening. I was backgrounding the "cp" task, and I think this is what causes the problem. As a consequence of the drive dropping of it's mount point e.g. /dev/sdc disappears from all locations.
eg: /sys/block/sdc, /dev, /dev/disk

if I switch off the drive, and then switch back on, it remounts on the next avaialble i.e. /dev/sdc. when this all is repeated, it moves on to /dev/sdd...

a complete hard reboot of the PC starts everything back at /dev/sdc, sda & sdb already being used by internal drives

I'm guessing that it's the "udev" settings that aren't compatible with backgrounding of the cp operation to an external USB drive. I'm susspecting that while the cp is forground, and a high priority process actively copying, all is well, when in background and it's switched out for another process it's causing the drive to get ineligantly unmounted.

I'm copying 300gb+ hence the backgrounding, as all seems to be fine at the moment, just thought the behaviour might be of general interest.
