[gnome 2.22] How to remove ~/Desktop

Is there a way to make Gnome stop using desktop?

Yes. Run

 gconf-editor

Navigate to    apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop and set it to false

Or you could launch it with

nautilus --no-desktop --browser

I have done that but when I delete ~/Desktop it's recreated after second.

Hmm, it's been doing this to me too. I hope that second thing does it. I have no idea why they thought it would be a good idea to litter my home directory with garbage, but between auto-creating folders I don't want and making registry edits this is like a vacation in Windows.

I don't know if this helps, but the new Firefox creates the ~/Desktop automatically if "Desktop" is selected as the default "Save files to" directory.

It seems to do it if it's not too. At least this business started when I upgraded to FF3 (which has been very nice otherwise).

But that last registry edit seems to have done it; thanks thayer.

happens here when i visit firefox's preferences and its freakin irritating


There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)
