Is there a way to make Gnome stop using desktop?

Yes. Run
gconf-editor
Navigate to apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop and set it to false
Or you could launch it with
nautilus --no-desktop --browser

The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

Run
gconf-editor
Navigate to /apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir and set it to true

Hmm, it's been doing this to me too. I hope that second thing does it. I have no idea why they thought it would be a good idea to litter my home directory with garbage, but between auto-creating folders I don't want and making registry edits this is like a vacation in Windows.

thayer it's not perfect but does what it supposed to, thank you.

I don't know if this helps, but the new Firefox creates the ~/Desktop automatically if "Desktop" is selected as the default "Save files to" directory.

It seems to do it if it's not too. At least this business started when I upgraded to FF3 (which has been very nice otherwise).
But that last registry edit seems to have done it; thanks thayer.

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)
