i m currently using archlinux 2007.08 which is completely upgraded.
i m using arch inside vmware workstation 6.0.4.
i m using arch as a server, i have no X server installed, and i have installed mysql/samba/ftp servers in it.
i have also used the vmware shared folders and shared folders from my host drive and then pointed ftp and samba server to them
ftp works perfectly fine, upload and download.
the problem is samba, the connectivity is fine, and i can copy files from the samba share, i have copied various movies in the vmware shared folder, which is then shared using samba.
but when i watch movies directly from the share (without copying), the movies work fine for a limited time (around 10 mins ), but then start stuttering, i dont know if its a arch problem or a samba problem, i have iptables working, but its on default (all chains as ACCEPT).
also, the processor or ram is no problem, as i have disabled almost everything unneeded, and the system was at 30% used at host, and 60% idle, so, its not a processor/ram issue.
any help will be appreciated.

Same issue here, seems to be related to gamin/fam...

Haven't a clue. What's your host OS?

i m using athlon64 2.4 ghz, its a little slow, but i am careful that my system remains at least 50% idle, and thats enough for uninterrupted samba sharing.

What's the Load Average on the host machine and virtual machine when the problems occur?

Host uses 30% at average, while arch VM uses 1-2% at idle or 10% when in load, and another VM (XP with many bloat removed) which uses 15-20% at idle, i have set both arch and XP to be bridged so they both have there own ip addresses, the weird thing is that from the XP VM if i play the files on arch samba share, there is no lagging/stuttering at all (only stutters if the CPU is at 90-100% but that's expected), but from another network machines, i still experience the lags.

Load Average - not the CPU usage
The uptime command will give you the load averages in the last 3 columns:
fukawi2 ~ $ uptime
13:16:10 up 4 days, 19:21, 1 user, load average: 0.28, 0.12, 0.08

Hmmm, that's nothing exciting...
Try this under load:
vmstat 1 10

I noticed similar behavior on my two Arch servers. When I play a tv show it stutters a little bit, if the show is in HD it is barely watcheable. I noticed if I play the movie on a more powerful box the stutters are less frequent.

There's nothing there that would indicate problems... Try running the same (load average & lmstate) on the client too, maybe it's the client having trouble, not the server?
