Gnome crashes... just don't know why.

Hi...

I've had several crashes using Arch64 + Gnome. (Usually) shortly after logging in, Gnome produces weird graphics for a few seconds, then locks up. [ctrl]+[alt]+[back] resurrects the system without any problems. I've tried to check the logs, but being the noob that I am, I didn't really find a cause for this behaviour.
Perhaps you guys know why gnome keeps on crashing.

Thanks in advance

Re: Gnome crashes... just don't know why.

This line:

Jul 30 18:34:00 sleepy dhclient: wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801

According to your kernel log, your wireless card is wlan0.  I'm not sure what wmaster0 is, but I'm pretty sure that's the network device causing the issue here; NetworkManager can be pretty finicky when your network configuration is not correct.

My Rigs:
- Mid-2007 iMac 20", Intel 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2x1GB DDR2-800, 250GB SATA HDD, and...MIGHTY MOUSE!!! tongue, OSX 10.5 Leopard, ATI Radeon 2400XT 128MB
- HP zv6203cl, AMD Athlon 64 3200 S939, 2x512MB DDR400, 80GB 4200rpm HDD, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M 128MB, Arch i686 cool
- 1986 Gibson SG Junior Cherry Red, Ibanez 15W amp, DigiTech RP250 modeling processor

Re: Gnome crashes... just don't know why.

Thanks for your answer...

I think you're right, those crashes are related to the NM-applet. Just the question how to solve that remains. I don't remember changing anything that could create such an device and the rc.conf doesn't show it either.
Googling the term "wmaster0" just brings up more questions... Anybody know what to do here?

Re: Gnome crashes... just don't know why.

I am not sure if it will help, but since you certain that it might be related to the nm-applet, you could try using a different network manager and see if the problem goes away.

You could try WICD, for instance. Be careful while installing it though, because installing wicd removes nm-applet and you may be left without a network and your wireless profiles, if you have any.

Looks in Xorg.log and Xorg.log.old, may be you find answer there.
