rtl8187 problem

Hi,

I use the netgear usb WG111v2 with rtl8187 (2.6.25 kernel). Each time I try dhcp, it times out. The tip in the wiki with the rate change does not work. The same happens if I use netcfg2.

Does it work for anyone? With which settings?

Re: rtl8187 problem

Hi there!

I also have problems with an onboard rtl8187 wifi device in one of my machines.

I can connect to an encrypted network (WPA 2 w/ AES), and do normal web browsing, but if I use Skype with video conferencing or do a huge network transfer with scp, the connection stalls/dies completely (but the network monitor in Gnome still shows it as being fine, while it's not). The only way to get the connection back, is to remove and load back the rtl8187 module.

Googling around, I found some people with the same issues. It looks like a driver problem.
I've been using this device since the drivers got merged in the kernel (2.6.23), and until now, nothing has changed. sad

In your case, you can't even get connected. Can you post your network profile, to see if you have something wrong?

Here is mine:

CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="AXIS Network"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SCAN="yes"
SECURITY="wpa"
ESSID="AXIS"
KEY="secret_password"
IP="dhcp"
TIMEOUT=10

Cheers

Well, your profile looks fine.It may be something from the router side, perhaps.

I remember that using a mixed security mode (WPA + WPA2, instead of just one of them), caused some timeouts while getting an IP from DHCP.
Do you have just WEP, or do you have more than one security mode enabled? And if you try using WPA instead of WEP, does it work better?

Re: rtl8187 problem

I tried it before without any encryption and had the same problem, so it is really a problem of the connection and not of the encryption mode. (Sometimes it connects for a very short time, I have an ip but cannot connect to the internet. After that it loses the connection again.)

Re: rtl8187 problem

Right now, I am sometimes able to connect to the internet and surf. At other times, I receive an IP address but cannot connect to the internet afterwards (not even ping the router).

Any suggestions how to make the conncetions more reliable?
