Interesting question...
.xinitrc  - X runs apps, specified here, e.g. "exec startfluxbox"
.bashrc - when you start a new bash session, bash reads values, runs commands from here
.xprofile - dunno, maybe some variables

.xinitrc for executing which DE or WM session you want to startup from startx

.bashrc is for setting up custom variables, bash profiles or aliases, functions, etc. for bash at login or the startup of your favorite terminal.

.xprofile I never heard of.

.xprofile exists but is very little used. It's read by some graphical login software like GDM (I don't know for the others).

Distros handle the ~/.x* files differently, just to confuse us. IIRC, /usr/bin/startx in Arch looks at ~/.xprofile
