.xinitrc - X runs apps, specified here, e.g. "exec startfluxbox"
.bashrc - when you start a new bash session, bash reads values, runs commands from here
.xprofile - dunno, maybe some variables

.bashrc is for setting up custom variables, bash profiles or aliases, functions, etc. for bash at login or the startup of your favorite terminal.

Distros handle the ~/.x* files differently, just to confuse us. IIRC, /usr/bin/startx in Arch looks at ~/.xprofile
