usenet and p2p questions

Hello everyone! I'm thinking of starting to use Usenet and was wondering if there's anything I should do as far as masking my IP or anything else to do when downloading? Should I take any precautions when using p2p downloading? I've read that Usenet is pretty anonymous, but thought I'd ask! I'm sure there are some excellent resources via google but am not sure what to search for...

Cheers!

Re: usenet and p2p questions

Torrents for the win in my opinion. P2P, ie limewire, is not all that secure as they set out to be, on the other hand, torrents imo are far more secure, because more people review on them and tell you if they are junk or worth dl'in.

Usenet for the win in my opinion. It's way faster and there is way more hd content available

Re: usenet and p2p questions

Sorry by p2p I meant torrents! Limewire et al are horrible. Probably should clarify my post a little, I'm asking is there anything I should do, masking my IP address or something (I really don't know) to protect myself when using these? From what I've seen Usenet ftw as it is quality material and rapid fast. Torrents win in terms of amount of stuff, great for obscure music etc... or so I'm told... tongue

@vintendo I've always been unsuccessful with HD stuff, my laptop monitor is 1200x800 nothing fancy, do I need a higher resolution to play HD movies, shows etc?

Re: usenet and p2p questions

I've read that Usenet is pretty anonymous

The bad news: For binary downloads you'll want an account with a premium server, which isn't anonymous at all.
The good news: This doesn't really matter unless you plan to post content of questionable legkality. Leeching is safe.

Torrents win in terms of amount of stuff

Usenet is HUGE, and good servers have retention rates of 200+ days.  Have a look around places like newzbin.
Also have a look at hellanzb in AUR, it'll make your life a lot easier.

Happy leeching!

Re: usenet and p2p questions

A retention of 200+days is unusual, Giganews has a very good retention but the average(in the netherlands) is 100-120, and that is more then enough for me. And another vot for hellanzb here _0_

No, your laptop screen can play 720p content(screen wise, i don't know how powerful your laptop is). All the hd tv-shows are 720p, movies are 720 and 1080p

Re: usenet and p2p questions

Point of note people - we do not allow discussion of downloading illegal material here.

I'm going to be "nice" (ie. keeping this thread unlocked) and assume you want to anonymize yourself while downloading perfectly legal things because you don't want your usage patterns tracked by "big brother", in which case you're being awfully paranoid and probably don't need to worry about it.

However, we're watching, and may close it at any point.
