Network Based User Directory

With windows Active Directory is the standard for network based authentication. What is the equivalent in linux?

I am familiar with OpenLDAP, I am not really looking for a complete Active Directory replacement. I would just like to manage user accounts on multiple computers from a central location. Any ideas?
