OK,
Dumb, dumb, dumb. I updated to the latest postgresql yesterday (8.3.3 to 8.3.4 - minor upgrade, so I didn't really think it over) and now postgresql won't start anymore:
# /etc/rc.d/postgresql start
:: Starting PostgreSQL [BUSY]
pg_ctl: invalid data in PID file "/var/lib/postgres/data/postmaster.pid" [FAIL]
The pid-file is empty. I read in the change logs that there was a bugfix, probably related to this problem:
Fix pg_ctl to properly preserve postmaster command-line arguments across a restart (Bruce)
But I don't see any questions related to mine in the PGSQL mailing lists since the update. Does anyone know what to do? First thing I'll try is to reinstall the old version...
Zl.

Hmmm... Keeps on adding up: I recently flushed my cached packages. Does anyone have a 8.3.3 i686-package for me?

Nevermind - found the packages and downgraded both postgresql and postgresl-libs to 8.3.3. But still the problem persists.
Help?

Problem solved: renaming thepostmaster.pid-file and restarting the server (in 8.3.3) worked. I won't be experimenting with this any further, because this dbase is very important to my company. Does anyone know how this could happen? Or is it something that has to be changed prior to the upgrade?

EDIT: problem is on both x86 and arch 64 installs
