[SOLVED] Accessing Windows shares on GNOME? I just can't...

(I hope I'm posting in the right section of the forum)

So I've recently switched to GNOME. When I was using KDEmod, all I needed to do is load the fuse module, and I was able to access smb://windows-box-address/share on another computer.
I've been reading the Arch wiki and googling around, but to be honest, I actually don't know where to start and what I'm doing wrong.

When I go to Places --> Network in GNOME, it sees the Windows box on the network, but when I open it in Nautilus, the shares aren't shown.
And if I go to Places --> Connect to server and enter the address and my username, it asks for a password and then an error pops out, saying "Can't display location "smb://windows-box-address/share/; The specified location is not mounted".

Could someone point me to where I'm going wrong?
I'm sorry for not providing more information, but like I said, I really have no idea where to start.

Many thanks!

edit: solved (see below)

I'm not an expert but for the error that you show maybe your problem is about udev or hal or fstab because the error is saying that the share
is not mounted, so maybe you have to mounted first. Did you seach for samba shares ?

In ps aux, do you have gvfs running?

I guess you installed samba...
You are supposed to run the command line smb://windows-box-address/share /mountpoint everytime you want to mount a windows share.
If I understood your "problem", you want nautilus to mount automatically your windows shares. Just install the gvfs package. It should solve the problem.

Hope it'll help.

Thanks for your good will to help guys, and sorry for not replying immediately (I was in a bit of rush yesterday).

Yes, samba and gvfs are installed, but still to no avail.
Should I configure my udev, hal or fstab in a specific way? If so, how?

Running smb://windows-box-address/share /mountpoint results in "The location or file could not be found" error, and if I try adding nautilus in the front, the Nautilus pops up and says "Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of "(share) on (windows-box-address)": Invalid argument".

What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
In gnome I use the "Places/Connect to Server" resource.
In the "Connect to Server" select "Windows Share" in "the Service type"
Then the "server" name and the "share" name
Then click the "Connect" to connect to the smb folder
You can too save this in your bookmark using the "add bookmark" checkbox. then you can access the folder using "Places/bookmark".

Tried that one first, but it didn't work.
Should I post contents of any config files here? Would that help anyone? If so, which ones?

thx

Somebody hit me in the head multiple times and call me an idiot.

The windows installation was heavily broken, and on top of that, I somehow failed to set the user rights properly. No wonder I couldn't see anything.
Anyway, a very big thanks to you guys for bearing with me, and for all your effort! smile
