Hmm, that's a new one. During a --sysupgrade, pacman will only remove a package if it is being replaced by another package or if it needs to resolve conflicts (but then it asks permission first). During the confirmation phase (when it lists the targets and asks "Proceed with upgrade?") did it list pacman as a "Remove" target?
something like this?
Remove: pacman
Targets: other packages listed here
Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n]

this is rather disconcerting actually. what could have caused pacman to be removed? Have the servers been hacked or was there a bad call somewhere?

I was thinking about that, and it's pretty dangerous. I mean, let's suppose Judd had a nervous breakdown, and adds some malicious code to a package. It could fuck a lot of people. For example, he could change initscripts with empty files. You would just be screwed. I'm just using my imagination. Don't know if this is possible. Correct me if I'm wrong.
And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?

It's perfectly possible, don't worry. It's also perfectly possible that next time you visit the doctor, that injection will actually be a poison that will kill you gradually and painfully within a day. Next time you go somewhere by plane, the pilot may be having a nervous breakdown and decide to commit kamikaze suicide. Next time you leave your child at the daycare center, the caretaker may be planning horrible things. Next time you lie unconscious for an operation, the surgeon could go crazy. Next time you Syu, a package could have an install script that automatically does 'cat /dev/urandom > /dev/hda'. It may even be a package from one of the TURs, and not Judd at all.
All these things are possible, but we don't normally worry about them because we allow people to gain trust over time, so that we can let them do the things for us that they do best. It's a fundamental part of societal mechanics.
Do you have a problem with trust, or did you make that post just because you were bored?

i believe he was being sarcastic.
i do trust thedevs but being complacent that security cannot be broken is ... not very prudent.

apeiro, well I which I could say no, but im not 100% sure if the target was to remove pacman, but as sarah31 said, wat could have caused pacman to be removed. It was just an ordinary update, which I do at least every week, besides on the weekends when im a little paranoid and do it twice a day
Besides that im very found of arch, and want to learn more about it. To bad that there dont exist so much documentation about it...but hey wat is forum for . Being addicted to a OS doesnt mean that u have to be a non social.

pacman -Sf pacman
should reinstall the entire pacman package, of which abs is a part.
