Small freezes on desktop

I finished setting up an archlinux install, recently migrating from borking my ubuntu install. I got everything set up perfectly fine, but often while using kde4 i get small 'hiccups' and the mouse will freeze, sometimes even audio will stutter, and then it will unfreeze and go back to normal. This happens a lot and is quite annoying, any suggestions? need more info?

edit: oh, and it doesn't matter if all i have running is kde4 or more programs. it does it either way.

Re: Small freezes on desktop

Maybe your computer can't handle KDE 4, it's a bit of a hog. What are your system's specs?

It could also be a video problem. ATI, Nvidia, or Intel? And do you use the closed drivers?

Re: Small freezes on desktop

Hi! I'm new to archlinux and i seem to have the same problem, i was going to make a new post but I can post here. I'm using gnome and have an ATI Radeon X1950XT card, it worked fine in ubuntu, so I think it has to do with the drivers or something, as these freezups appear less often when I turn compiz-fusion off. I'll post my Xorg conf here too:

Re: Small freezes on desktop

I too wanted to post an entry about this problem ! My system freezed randomly in about 1 second (couldn't move mouse, couldn't type) then back to normal. It happened not only with firefox, but with small programs as well.

But now after i turned compiz off, my laptop runs smoothly again (with or without the proprietary ATI driver).

Re: Small freezes on desktop

Aw, yes I probably should tell you all that.
I have a core 2 duo, 1.86ghz, 2gb ram, x1800xt (256mb), proprietary drivers for the video card and 2 monitors @ 1680x1050 with big desktop. With ubuntu I never had any problems with it stuttering, though with gentoo it also does the same thing. I really like gentoo and arch, but they seem to be unstable for me compared to debian, which is sad, because I like the whole minimalist thing (but I like having full use of my desktop more). Also, arch's implementation of KDE 4 is a little bit nicer.

EDIT: also, I think I had the same problem with only using one monitor before I turned on big desktop.

Re: Small freezes on desktop

I tried removing all compiz-fusion related packages, rebooting and then installing them from abs and compile them myself, however I still got the same problem, stuttering and "hack" in the music while the whole desktop just freezes for a second. Probably related to the fglrx driver then...

EDIT: Found a solution on the archlinux forums smile http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 55#p442655 this should be added to the wiki or something, I think I'll see to that tomorrow, now I need some sleep tongue
