I've always used rhythmbox as my media player and have never had a problem with it until recently. Now, whenever I pause and then press the resume button, it crashes with a segmentation fault. I would show the debug output, but every time I start rhythmbox with the -d argument, it locks up. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. The crash has something to do with file seeking in gstreamer - when you press the pause button, the gstreamer process is stopped after a while, and when you resume it, the file is re-opened with gstreamer, and then seek'ed to the position you left it in.
Try seeking in any music (mp3) file, rhythmbox should crash (or hang).

Yes, Gstreamer has been crap ever since around the Gnome 2.24 update. Rhythmbox starts acting up every time I seek an mp3 and Totem crashes when I seek a wmv.
This is such a huge problem for all Gnome multimedia and there's still no solution?

personaly i don't have any problem with rhythmbox
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I have the same problem with seeking mp3s in rhythmbox. Hopefully we'll get updates to fix this soon...

After starting rhythmbox from terminal, this is the output if I try to seek songs:
(rhythmbox:4168): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Couldn't unlink stream file:///data/multimedia/music/%E6%9D%8E%E5%85%8B%E5%8B%A4%20-%20%E7%B4%85%E6%97%A5.mp3: things will probably go quite badly from here on
Please don't mind the crazy filename...it's supposed to be Chinese characters...

So I guess this problem isn't all that common since so few people are reacting to it? Sure is annoying though...

Last bump. Here's what I get from the console with Rhythmbox when I seek a song or pause an mp3 and try to continue playing it:
Segmentation fault
Also got these at some point earlier, not sure if they're related or what I exactly I did:
Rhythmbox-Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox-metadata|application/pdf-purkaja|decoder-application/pdf
Rhythmbox-Message: Automatic missing codec installation not supported (helper script missing)
And finally here's what Totem gives me when I try to seek a wmv video:
** Message: Error: Sisäinen tietovirtavirhe. (translates roughly to Inner data stream error)
gstasfdemux.c(1372): gst_asf_demux_loop (): /GstPlayBin:play/GstDecodeBin:decodebin0/GstASFDemux:asfdemux0:
streaming stopped, reason wrong-state
No one has any idea what's wrong or how to correct it?
Applications using Gstreamer are quite useless with all these problems...

same problem here.
banshee and rhythmbox both crash.
i'm using 'listen' which doesn't crash.
i'd recommend that until GNOME get their act together.

I'm guessing it's more of a Gstreamer problem. Or a fairly rare Arch package update problem which happens on some systems. Like ours
Luckily Songbird finally seems ready for regular use.

Damn it, I can't stand using Gnome with as big a portion of it as Gstreamer being crippled. I'm going to reinstall Gstreamer.
What's the best way to remove it with all its settings? Simply sudo pacman -Rns gstreamer0.10?

I have the same problem, but it does not exist in banshee or totem. It must be related to the crossfade plugin for me, as mentioned on Ubuntu forums. I would suggest sudo pacman -Rcns gstreamer0.10

Well the latest Gstreamer updates have apparently improved something since Totem doesn't crash anymore when I seek wmv videos but Rhythmbox is still giving me the same problems.
Just wish there was some way to fix these problems. Other than a complete reinstallation...

I've been having the same problems with rhythmbox crashing while seeking or pausing in songs. After reading Intrepids post I tried disabling crossfading in rhythmbox and restarted, and now seeking and pausing seems to work fine.
So if you have problems, try disabling crossfading in rhythmbox.

Segfaults are usually app bugs. Try old versions of Rythmbox and GStreamer to see if those work, and file a bug with Arch or the app devs (they usually appreciate backtraces).

This is a known issue with Rhythmbox as I had it too. It happens when you pause tracks if you have the gapless crossfade functionality enabled. It has since been fixed and a new release 0.12 will be out in the next week which will incorporate the fix. Sit tight and wait for 0.12 and segmentation faults should stop.
