Archlinux wiki offline

Hello,

everone

When i installed archlinux i always (not always) have the problem
that i need the wiki. This is not a problem when i got
my network running, but when i don`t --  this is a problem,
which could most of the time could be solved if
i`ve got the wiki, especially when i`ve got special hardware that`s only supported
by a special kernel or modules.
So my question at the developer, maintainer or distributers of
archlinux is, could you deliver an offline-wiki.
I don`t know how big it is, maybe doing the update with xdelta
to save some space and bandwith.
This would really help me and i think some other people too.
I though about doing a httrack, but i really don`t want to
do that , because i like archlinux and i don`t want to hurt the
bandwith and i i am not really an expert with httrack.
What i suggest is a httracked zipped file, which i can browse
with a browser, so a a html based not something like a pdf.

What do you think?
Oh and if you ask, what would will he do with an html, when there
isn`t any browser in the setup-iso --- why not include a
text browser? And maybe this is even a better idea, if
some arch-based distro`s have a more advanced browser or
x-enviroment.

Thanks for your answers

Re: Archlinux wiki offline

All you should really need to get up and running would be the "beginner's guide", and maybe the "official installation guide", right?

Just go to those pages, right click, and save as html.
I think a dump of the entire wiki would be overkill.

Re: Archlinux wiki offline

I believe the mission critical pages are now on the install cd.

archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Re: Archlinux wiki offline

Yes, just save the more important ones and don't try to download the whole wiki .... I have tried but after a short while I realised it was really way too much for what I needed.
Save the pages as you need them (either a small fix or the whole walk-trough).

Re: Archlinux wiki offline

Hello,

everyone

Yes, i think you`re right for the most part.
Maybe i didn`t think it through.
At the moment where this has gone thru my mind
was at installing arch on my eeepc which will need
a special kernel for accessing the network.
So i thought it would be a benefit to have the special
wiki entry to handle this, besides having the special
kernel before. :-)
But i think there is one special case where it
would be useful to have most of the wiki-entries
accessable. This would be at a complete offline
installation with most of the packages on a dvd.
But that is more of a problem for the dvd distributers.
I really didn`t need this, because i am most most of the time online,
but for others it could be a yes or no for using archlinux.
Oh and by the way a find some similar topic.

I didn`t  install archlinux for a long time so it`s my fault
that i didn`t recognize the guides on the install iso.

Greetings

Actually, I think having all the wireless and network related wiki entries on the CD would be really helpful. Once you have the network going, then you can get the rest online. I think if they were stored as plain text they would still be very small, but if you have network issues they could be indispensible.

Re: Archlinux wiki offline

I don't recommend we all go out and start doing this, but if you really insist that you need a local copy...

wget --recursive --no-clobber --page-requisites --html-extension --convert-links --restrict-file-names=windows --domains wiki.archlinux.org --no-parent wiki.archlinux.org

Re: Archlinux wiki offline

Hello,

everybody

Thanks fukawi2 for the command. I have some experience with httrack and
i think it is using wget, which is a powerful tool. But as mentioned i don`t need
it at the moment it was a suggestion to help other, coming of a self experienced problem.
I don`t like to use httrack, because if i update let`s say after a month, i think it will
download every page and look for difference. I don`t like to stress the bandwith.
So what i like to see is that some people, which have direct access to the server will
use httrack (because i think in my experience, it will change the links to behave like
it is hosted on the disk.) to do a backup of the wiki, upload it to rapidshare.com, post a
message and a md5 in the forum and then me or other will download it upload to
other file-hoster like megaupload.com. After 3 month he/she will httrack it again, zip it,
do a xdelta and repeat the upload procedure.
But i don`t know how many Mb this will take and if any maintainer would like to do
this, but as i mentioned it is not so important at this moment and was just an idea.
So let`s see what will happened.

Greetings
and thanks for answers.
