I don't use a login manager and I have noticed that when I first log in my .bashrc doesn't get sourced.
When I start X and open a terminal it works as it should.
This is a .bashrc that I had copied over from an old installation if that makes a difference.

.bash_profile is what will be sourced when you log in through a vc.

Add this to bash_profile
[ -f "~/.bashrc" ] && . ~/.bashrc
