I'd kind of like to know what upgrades they are performing.

The upgrade is....
2x146gb mirror -> 2x300gb mirror.
4gb RAM -> 16gb RAM
and moving to x86_64, processor already supports it.

What does it need 16gb of RAM for if it was doing fine with 4 ?
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

If you were seriously asking.... more things can be cached.

What time zone will the downtime stem from?
Or better yet, give us a GMT time of when it will go down at least

was is probably the key word here, as we have a lot more website and forum traffic than we did at the end of last year. We've gone from 8000 posts/month to nearly 16000 posts/month in that timeframe and our server does a lot more than just the web stuff, so having a lot more RAM is really helpful, especially when it comes to caching the sh** out of things.

Out of curiosity, exactly what does it do?
I can see that it:
- Is a mirror, and runs FTP
- Runs a Python framework to handle the front page/AUR
- Runs this PHP website
What else?

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

It is already 21-Nov-08 in certain of the world.....
Has the upgrade been done?
Everything just seems smooth and I don't feel the down time (I was at work and no access to the Internet).

Of course it has. With the servers standing in the US, and ArchLinux admin from Australia will get up at 2am in the morning to update the servers... SCNR

Runs the forums, bug tracker, and AUR.
Runs the mailman mailing lists
Holds our main pacman repos
Is the primary rsync host for all tier 1 mirrors
Maintains svn for core/extra and cvs for community
Maintains all unsupported package files
And lots more smaller things

OT: cvs for community? Isn't git the shit today?

Yes, the community repo still uses CVS. I was hoping that someone in the TU body would help fix/improve that, but looks like it's another task that I'll have to do 8(

Probably to SVN to keep the same repo structure as we now have in core/extra which works quit nicely in this situation.
