I just upgraded as follows:
checking package integrity...
(8/8) checking for file conflicts [#] 100%
(1/8) upgrading dhcpcd [#] 100%
(2/8) upgrading ncurses [#] 100%
(3/8) upgrading grub [#] 100%
warning: /boot/grub/menu.lst installed as /boot/grub/menu.lst.pacnew
(4/8) upgrading ktorrent [#] 100%
(5/8) upgrading man-pages [#] 100%
(6/8) upgrading openssl [#] 100%
(7/8) upgrading sudo [#] 100%
(8/8) upgrading tzdata [#] 100%
bash-3.2#
and upon (cold) restart I found my desktop empty, with a new background, the icons gone from my apps panel and firefox not connecting to its homepage(!?)...
This is not the first time and it's getting tiresome. It is not obvious to me which of the above applications would be responsible for setting my desktop back to zero, as it were, if any of them. I am using a vanilla x64/KDE 4.1 Arch installation.
Can someone explain what is going on?

Did you merge the grub menu.lst file with the .pacnew version?
While I can't see anyway that would bugger with your home directly, stranger things have happened... Do you have a separate /home partition?

Wow that's weird... None of those packages have anything to do with that sort of stuff 0.o

Could be a random case of Gnome buggery.
My wife - who NEVER does a pacman -Syu (I have to do it for her sneakily, and the last one was a download of some 500mb+) - booted yesterday to a green desktop, with wallpaper, icons etc. gone.
2.24 methinks.

Damn those sick, cottaging gnomes.

I believe he stated that he is using KDE, not GNOME.
Have you reboot without an update to verify that the updates are the cause?
Does simply restarting X have the same effect?

All of these configuration settings should be stored in your homedir. If this is a recurring issue, it may have to do with permission in your home dir...

Does the homedir mount from a separate partition? If something messed with the mounting then it could be that all of your configs were not present a it defaulted back, but then again, you'd probably have noticed that.

Thanks for all the responses!
Yes, I have a dedicated /home partition, and, no, I did not merge the grub pacnew file with the current menu.lst file. However, I had a look at it after the incident, but saw no reason for a merge, i.e. I found no visible changes in the standard setup. Also, even with a merge, I can't see how it might influence my desktop arrangements...
This is of course not a serious issue, but I find it strange, considering the apps being upgraded. Besides, I find it irritating, since I expect Arch to be perfect! ![]()
I apologize for the late reply; sometimes events in 'real' life take priority...

No, I did not try to back out the upgrades and reboot.
I ordered the desktop the way I want it and everything has been fine since...

Hey,
I just had the same thing happen when I upgraded my KDEmod packages from 4.1.3-2 to 4.1.3-3... I don't use icons, but my desktop background got reset.
I have home on a separate partition, but it certainly was available, and nothing else has changed.
Pete.
