ssh connection drops 4 all users except root

i can't establish ssh connections to a fresh install of Arch64. In all cases the connection drops after the password
is entered within about 2 second. here is an auth.log exemplar:

Nov 25 09:17:32 archie sshd[2751]: Accepted password for mark from 192.168.1.21 port 49215 ssh2
Nov 25 09:17:32 archie sshd[2751]: pam_unix_session(sshd:session): session opened for user mark by (uid=0)
Nov 25 09:17:34 archie sshd[2751]: pam_unix_session(sshd:session): session closed for user mark

i've tried windows-xming w/ssh,windows-putty, archlinux-ssh

however, root can login just fine!

Any ideas where to look?

tried ssh -vvv user@host? it should give some more information from the client-side.
