Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

I am trying to get Archlinux running on an Acer Aspire One.
In the wiki pages http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_Aspire_One it says that it is recommended to use kernel >=2.6.26 to get lan working. So my question is how do I get that kernel installed. The arch install image uses 2.6.25.6-1 so that means I have no network working. It also says in the wiki how to get the kernel26-one installed, but not where to get it...
I hope someone can help me find a solution so I can get wired and wireless networking. (And so I can get anything installed!)

EDIT: Sry.... Found the kernel26-one. Maybe I should just try that...

EDIT: I found the package in aur but can't find which file I can use to install.... Any help appreciated!

Re: Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

In the wiki it says:

pacman -U /mnt/<kernel filename>

But I don't know where to get this kernel file.. What is it I need to download...

Do you really know how to use AUR?

EDIT:
I found a precompiled package for kernel26-one, but I dunno if it's safe, use under your own risk:
http://carlocci.ngi.it/arch/kernel26-on … pkg.tar.gz

There's also a pkgbuild right there:

Proud Ex-Arch user.
Still an ArchLinux lover though.

Currently on Kubuntu 9.10

No I have not used aur before, but I am just trying to follow the wiki, which gives directions how to install the kernel but not where to get it...

I will look at the links you have posted

If you had read the wiki correctly, in the beginning it tells about the Acer Aspire One thread on the forum found here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51796

There gothicknight also provides packages of his latest kernels precompiled. Those by LTSmash are really old and I don't even know the author. Maybe read a bit on the thread. Highly recommened, even if already 24 pages long.

Re: Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

Sorry... I didn't read the full 24 pages in that thread.
Maybe I should, but I just thought maybe someone could help me find the information that seemed to be so obvious that it is not mentioned in the wiki.

As a solution: is there any install-images of archlinux that I could find somewhere that uses a kernel as new as 2.6.26 or maybe even 2.6.27?

Then I wouldn't have to think about this problem of not having ethernet or wireless working.
I just want to use arch because in my previous experience on other hardware it has been the easiest way of getting a light system the way I want.

Re: Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

Well, at least reading like the last few pages is always a clever idea to see recent problems. There you could have found this post by gothicknight with a link to his kernel for download (which is not recommended though): http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 95#p453795

For a more recent usb image check this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=60385 It's just been posted yesterday, but based on another image that has been in the same subforum for weeks. I had used that to successfully install Arch on my AA1. If you want to install the kernel26-one right into the installation you can "pacman -U -r /tmp/install kernel26-one-2.6.27.7-1.pkg.tar.gz" from the installation environment and have it ready for boot upon first run after installation.

For a more recent usb image check this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=60385

Thanks for the tip.
I am downloading that now and hopefully I will have ethernet working. I never had any special wish to use the kernel26-one. I just wanted to have the internet connection working so that I could install the programs I needed.

So thanks again... cool

Re: Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

So now I have installed from the newer install-image, but I am still not able to get ethernet working..

I am wondering if the problem is with the driver loaded: r8169.
The hardware is: Realtek, rtl8101e/rtl8102e

Any other ideas to troubleshoot this problem is most welcome, since I have no clue to the cause of this problem

EDIT: So I am changing the title.

Re: Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

I just installed arch on another computer which has had arch on it several times before with no problems. But also there I get no working ethernet. The hardware there is Realtek, RTL-8139.

I have tried looking through the arch beginners guide which I have used before to see if there has been som change in getting ethernet working, since I have not used arch for maybe 4-6 months.

But I can see no changes sad

I really don't know what I am doing wrong.
dmesg gives no errors on this.
The only thing I just discovered just now is that when the cable is plugged in the computers that have arch on them it connects to 192.168.0.2
And when I connect from my ubuntu machine it is 192.168.0.1 which is the address of my router.

As you can probably figure out by now I don't know so much on this subject. But I have never needed to know about any of this before since it just worked out of the box even on arch...

Any ideas? What am I doing wrong?

Re: Acer aspire one - No working ethernet - help!!

I installed the standard image (2008.06) and was upset no network interfaces worked.
I then installed just the package kernel26-one-2.6.27.7-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz linked on (I believe) page 24 of the long assed thread using a usb thumb drive and then both interfaces started to work properly after fixing the boot menu and rebooting.
