Deus Ex Awesome

After having made the switch to Awesome, I'm having some trouble running Deus Ex with Wine.
The game starts minimised, but when I click the task, Awesome just restarts, leaving the game minimised.
I know the game is working fine, it just won't work properly with Awesome.

I experience this problem with the game set to full screen mode, I expect it will work fine in windowed mode.

Try to use "use a virtual desktop" in winecfg

I was having similar problems playing Diablo II with wine in dwm.  Dwm seemed to mess up my resolution and freeze up whenever I tried to play it, even when using floating mode.  See this, maybe it might help: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=59282
