I have installed a clean Arch Linux install on my laptop (which is screaming fro something highly configurable and light because it is a little old).
I have added a user, plugged in a Internet cable and and rebooted and I tried this command:
sudo pacman -Syy
and I am getting the following error (and a few more which is quite identical):
error: failed retreiving file "core.db.tar.gz" from ftp.archlinux.org : transmission resolver failure
thank you for the help

Try to ping www.google.com
ping -c 3 www.google.com
That should indicate if your network connection is actually working, if not you may need to configure your network first. To do that, please refet to the beginner's guide on the wiki:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … cessary.29
Also, it seems you've set ftp.archlinux.org as your repository. You're advised to use a different repository as ftp.archlinux.org is speedthrottled to 50 Kbps. Again, please check the Beginner's guide on the wiki on how to change your repository.
The file in question is located here:
/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
You will need root rights.
