Is it really supposed to work this way?

So my firefox lags sometimes - no clue why, could be nvidia drivers, xorg, whatever. It's not that bad, so I'm not worried about it. Some sites will take about 5-10 seconds to load properly.

But when it loads for those 5-10 seconds it seems to affect the entire system. The whole system locks up including whatever background programs I have open. I can't alt tab, switch windows, do anything. I've tried ctrl+alt+backspacing before in one of these locks and it does work immediately, which hints that's it's xorg's fault. This really affects me because I like to multitask a lot and run a lot of background processes that I like to be able to switch to while I wait for other stuff. I'd also like to have the ability to smoothely kill a process if it's locked up. It's not purely a firefox problem. While firefox is usually what locks up, any process that locks up causes this behavior.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is it normal behavior? Is it the fault of xorg/nvidia drivers?

Edit:

It's worth adding that this is on my laptop which is quite modern, with a dual core 2.0ghz processor, 2GB of ram, and an nvidia 9800M GT.

Re: Is it really supposed to work this way?

Have you got your local machine's hostname in your hosts file?

I remember I used to have problems like this, until I found the little gem in the wiki about adding the output of 'hostname' to /etc/hosts

I can't find the actual article at the moment, only this:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Con … _name.2FIP

EDIT:
The beginners guide mentions about poor performance in regard to not setting /etc/hosts correctly:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … tc.2Fhosts

Thanks for the suggestion but no it was not that. My hosts file was set up slightly differently than suggested in the wiki, but set up as suggested does not change anything, and the same effect is still there.
