Nothing shows up on server

Hi all, I'm trying to set up a local server for testing webpages.

I followed the LAMP guide in the wiki, then I made a index.html file in ~/.public_html
but when I go to http://127.0.0.1 no files show up

What could be the problem?

first is public_html not .public_html. if you want to view index.html from ~/public_html then you type in browser http://localhost/~user where user is your username
