I want to buy a cheap and friendly archlinux printer.  I want to use a generic driver.  I do not want and hp printer.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I've always had great luck with Linux and various Brother laser printers.  My current printer is the Brother HL-5250DN and it seems to work perfectly.

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

Might want to look at the SAMSUNG CLP-315 it is a laser color printer that is selling for $125 on newegg right now. However I don't believe it uses a generic printer driver, but its a really good bang for the buck printer!

Same printer here -- I'm very happy with it.

Hi Ozar and fwojciec,

how did you configure the printer using arch?  Are the drivers available in pacman?  Could you give me some details here?

Thanks,

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I just used the PPD file that's provided on the driver CD that came with the printer.

Also: http://www.openprinting.org/show_printe … -HL-5250DN

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I second Brother. Mine worked well under Linux and felt sturdy. My Samsung ML-2510 even came with Linux drivers, but were dreaded binaries for circa-2006 distros. But, openprinting has a guide on how to copy over the CUPS files (as provided on CD!) and manually set it up. Based on the wealth of provided .ppd files, trick should work with many Samsung lasers. Samsung's at least trying to do the right thing, so if they have a $125 color model, I'd consider supporting them if it's listed as working.

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I have my Samsung CLP-310 hooked up to my server using the linux drivers they provide. The only complaint I have is that you have to use some precompiled binary filters or whatever. However they do have x86 and x86_64 version of the binary so this is not a huge problem.

I've used both the PPD driver that comes on the Brother CD, and the driver included included in the foomatic package in the Arch repo in the past, and both worked perfectly.

pacman -S cups gutenprint ghostscript foomatic-db

or... if you want to use the PPD driver on the CD, just copy the driver to the /usr/share/cups/model folder

...after doing either, go to localhost:631 in your web browser to set it up and configure it.

I've not tried the Brother HL-5240, but it should work under Linux as well, and save you about $50 to $60 bucks if you'd rather have it.

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I don't understand why you would not want HP. I have a HP 2605 colour laser, which installs via the ppd driver or via hplip. HP are one of the very few printer manufacturers that take Linux seriously.

I bought my printer for 170 euros via ebay > 18 months ago, and I still have 50% of the toners left. I can leave the printer unused for a month, and the very first print I make will be razor sharp. HP just happen to make very good printers with very good Linux support. Buying HP does not equal buying microsoft.....

Same here. All my printers have been HP, and pretty much all of them have worked very well with Linux, including this old black and white laser model I am using now.

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I don't know, I didn't mind using the supplied driver installer for my cheap Samsung ML-2010.   A monochrome printer that has always worked very well.  But it could have been set up manually via CUPS interface just the same I'm sure.  Laser printers are awesome.  I had to refill my cartridge once, using toner off of ebay.  Inkjet printers are of questionable quality and justifiable expense.  It costs less to have a photo company do it for you if that's what you're after.  Go laser if you haven't already.

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

I got an Sansung ML2510 at Staples for $49 after rebate.  Let's see how it goes.  My cups was not working, but after pacman -Syu is working now.

I let you know how it goes.

Thank you all.

Cheers!

Re: Archlinux cheap and friendly printer

Here is how I got it to work:

Directions
GNOME:
1. Install CUPS (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS#Installing_CUPS)
2. Install system-config-printer-gnome (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS#Alternative_CUPS_Interfaces)
3. Download Samsung ML-2510 Driver from Samsung Site (http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=us&CttFileID=2044837&CDCttType=DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=ML-2510&language=&cate_type=all&VPath=DR/200902/20090225161105890/UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz)

Main Page: (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDown.do?group=&type=&subtype=&model_nm=ML-2510&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=DR&vType=&prd_ia_cd=06010400&disp_nm=ml-2510&model_cd=&menu=download)

4. Follow Directions from CUPS site:

a. Extract Driver "UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz"
b. Copy cdroot/Linux/ARCH/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl from the Samsung package to /usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl
c. Copy cdroot/Linux/noarch/at_opt/share/ppd/ML-2510spl2.ppd (again from the Samsung package) to /usr/share/cups/model/custom/ML-2510spl2.ppd
d . Restart CUPS (# /etc/rc.d/cups restart)
e. Add Printer from System > Administration > Printing [hit forward/next/apply after each line]
    1. Server > Connect
    2. New > Printer
    3. App Socket/HP Deskjet> Host (I used router IP) Port 9100
    4. Choose Printer Driver on screen, should say Samsung or Custom Samsung
    5. Choose Driver Model
    6. Name Printer (can leave default usually)
    7. Hit Apply. Printer should be installed and asking to print test page
