Hello!
I just bought a new 640GB HDD, so i need to transfer all my data and my OS (Arch) from the old 500GB HDD.
Currently i have on the 500GB HDD: 1GB swap, 20GB partition which is root and home, and 440GB which is filled with data.
How do you suggest i transfer all that to my new HDD, should i make home a separate partition, can i just install Arch on my new HDD, and copy my entire home folder, so i keep my config files?
I was thinking 1GB swap, 12GB root, and the rest to be home, so 3 partitions. Is 12GB enough for root?
Any suggestions?
Cheers!

Or get a live cd / usb stick linux called "clonezilla" and just straight clone the entire thing to the new drive. It will take time but it works pretty well from what little experimentation I've done with it.

I DON'T want to do that, i want to make my home on a separate partition from root as i stated in the first post, so i'm just wondering which partition layout would be the best, not how to have the exact same thing on my new HDD
Cheers!

Whoa, calm down tiger! I read your OP as having a separate /home partition already too...
12gb should be enough for root. I use 16gb on my work desktop PC, but only ~4gb of that is used for a full Gnome desktop. If you're going to install a rediculously large amount of packages, you might get closer to that, but I'd say it should be plenty.
Why don't you try LVM - then you can resize all your partitions easily later on once the system is installed and you can see how much you're using...?

I use around 4GB on my i686. My system is pretty minimalist but I have some big packages installed as texlive and openoffice and some gnome libraries.
