hdparm

In my quest to determine why VLC is playing the audio from DVDs very choppily, I did a hdparam /dev/sr0, and got

HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Is there something wrong with how the kernel is utilizing my cd drive? Is it possibly related to my DVD woes?

Re: hdparm

Try hdparm -tT

You might need to use sdparm instead of hdparm too possibly...

read(2097152) returned 786432 bytes)
Timing buffered disk reads: read() failed: Input/output error

What should I do with sdparm? I don't see any timing tests in the man page. What's curious is that audio is the poor performer, video still glides along nicely.
