Can browse inernet in Firefox but can not ping

My friend just has installed Arch64  on his Core2Duo 3.0 GHz machine. Now, after filling out the gateway, network and nameserver entries in /etc/rc.conf and /etc/resolv.conf, he can nnot ping but he can browse the internet in Firefox but when I try to ping anything it failed. I could open Google in Firefox but pinging Google failed. I tried pinging different web-sites but nothing was successful.  Even "pacman" was frozen while connecting to server.

What could be the reason for this ? you can ask me more questions and I will provide you with the information. I think its a very serious stupidity of the system.

perhaps you are behind a firewall, such as behind a NAT, or behind a router which blocks icmp, etc, whats your network setup?

Were you able to get pacman to connect and get updates. If so, Mektub and Sin.citadel are right, you are probably behind a router or firewall which drops icmp packets, like ping. If you guys are on a local network together, like on a switch or router, you should try pinging each other. Also try pinging your loopback interface, 127.0.0.1.

Re: Can browse inernet in Firefox but can not ping

No, I am not able to connect pacman, neither I can ping anything. My friend has connected 2 computers to his Modem and uses internet on both of them (don't know if he is using a hub) . After 1 hour and 15 minutes I will go to his home (I am in office now) and will try to run iptables -L  and will check for NAT. Tell me some other things you want to check and I will report back with information.

Right now, Its 12:00 afternoon in India of Jan 9th, 2009 .

what do u mean modem, is it a switch, maybe the setup is that you friend has an internet connection (WAN) like DSL or something, and he is sharing the connection to the other computers using a switch, is that the case or is it something else? also, are u using dhcp or static ip assignment?
