Xorg error: Failed to load module

I'm trying to configure the X server. My configuration file was generated with "hwd -xa". But when I run "startx" I get this:

(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sun Jan 25 04:26:36 2009
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) Failed to load module "type1 (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

<here is where I control + C after a long pause>
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): unexpected signal 2.

Tell me if you need any other information.

Thanks,
Jordy

Re: Xorg error: Failed to load module

You could try commenting out the lines from your xorg, not even sure what any of those do

I tried commenting them out, but then it throws the error:

[snip]
(EE) Failed to load the module "intel" (module does not exist)
(EE) No drivers available
[snip]

And a search through xorg.conf bring me nothing for "intel".

Thanks,
Jordy

Re: Xorg error: Failed to load module

Welcome to the forums JordyD. hang in there, you'll get it soon enough.

The i810 driver has been depreciated, so it's good that it's gone. Do you have xf86-video-intel installed? That's where the 'intel' driver is.

--EDIT--

You may also want to read the sections of evdev here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg

Either install xf86-input-evdev right now, or disable hotplugging before you try to start X.

That got rid of the "i810" error, but what about "type1" and "record"? Should I just comment them out?

I would. I don't know anything about the record module, but I do know that the newer Xorg releases find fonts just fine.

You really don't need much of an xorg.conf file anymore anyway. This is what mine looks like. It's for a nVidia card, but as you can see, I'm letting most things auto-load:

Re: Xorg error: Failed to load module

Wow, mine is filled with stuff. It has a whole section that looks like it's just listing different resolutions.

But anyways, when I comment out those lines, I get:

[snip]
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

I'm not a X expert, but it would be helpful now to post your xorg.conf file.

Re: Xorg error: Failed to load module

Is there a way to attach it? It's pretty big.

Just put it in code tags. It will make it scrollable.

Re: Xorg error: Failed to load module

Do you know if the horizontal sync and vertical refresh are correct for your monitor? And, am I reading this right that you want 1024x768 resolution?

Yes, that's right. This is on a laptop, a Dell Latitude D610.

I'm not sure if the syncs are right, but the resolution is.

Re: Xorg error: Failed to load module

I don't think that I added anything here, but I tried to clean it up. Hopefully everything that you need gets auto-loaded. I doubt that the touch pad will work with this though, and I'd be really sure about the refresh rates. Also, if you don't need to switch color depths, you can make this even shorter.

You can also try to remove (by renaming) your xorg.conf file all together and see if that works for you.

You can also try to remove (by renaming) your xorg.conf file all together and see if that works for you.

This xorg.conf gave me:

[snip]

1: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x51) [0x80d8cb1]

5: /usr/bin/X [0x8071071]

Fatal Server Error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2) : unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

And if I take out the config file entirely:

[snip]
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file
New driver is "intel"
(==) Using default built-in configuration (30 lines)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

waiting for X server to shut down .

It flickers a bunch before I get this message, if that means anything, and at one point I can see the mouse.

Sorry JordyD. I'm at a loss here. I always try to keep these threads alive until someone more knowledgeable then me, which is a lot of people, jumps in to help.

Well, thanks for your help anyways. smile
I'll just keep looking around and see if I can find something.
