Multiple Desktops

Hello,

I was using Ubuntu with a process named compiz-real running alongside Gnome.  I was able to switch between seperate desktops.  Now I am able to do this via "WorkSpace Switcher" in Gnome running under Arch Linux.  However the screens couldn't run seperate processes.  For example in the Ubuntu environment I could have seperate instances of Pidgin running in each screen.  Is this possible in Arch/Gnome or do I need to install the Compiz addon?  I'm just not sure how to achieve this.

Thanks.

Re: Multiple Desktops

Well I know that you can run multiple instances of Pidgin by launching it with

pidgin -m

What other programs are giving you trouble?

That's an interesting solution however I think perhaps there's a better way.  The entire taskbar appears to be seperate in Ubuntu.  Can this be achieved?

Re: Multiple Desktops

You mean that you're seeing windows from all workspaces in the taskbar? Yeah, it's certainly possible to change that in Gnome, I just can't remember how (running Xfce here). Check the preferences for the window manager, it should be listed somewhere.

No, I'm not seeing all windows, it's the little icons beside the clock which are the same whereas it was completely seperate in Ubuntu.

Re: Multiple Desktops

As far as I can tell, what you're seeing is two X servers running. Can you drag windows between monitors in Ubuntu? Or is this all on a single screen?

Re: Multiple Desktops

After doing further research it would appear that Ubuntu creates seperate x sessions for each workspace opened.  Can this be done in Arch?  I'm sure it can.

Hmm, well unless this was some fancy modded version of Ubuntu I was using.

Re: Multiple Desktops

you could always start a second x session (you'd have to switch using ctrl+alt+f<whatever>)

Yes, I've been looking into this.  However startx -- :1 results in the following error:

error setting MTRR (base = 0xc8000000, size = 0x08000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)

Re: Multiple Desktops

Gnome is on CTRL+ALT+F7 and on F1 there's a new login terminal.  I'm not sure I understand how to start two instances of Gnome though.

Re: Multiple Desktops

So did compiz come out with a new plugin wherein you can have multiple instances of the same program running and you can put them on different desktops? If its compiz doing it, its probably virtual and there is only 1 gnome running. See if you have the same plugins in Compiz

This is an interesting thought.  I don't use compiz on my local machine and don't have access to the Ubuntu machine at the moment.
