Atheros PCMCIA (ath5k) won't find any AP's or get lease

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on here, although I'm not new to Arch.

I just installed Arch on a second laptop (old Gateway, Pentium 2).  I have a PCMCIA wireless card, which has an "Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5212/AR5213 Multiprotocol MAC/baseband processor (rev 01)" chipset.  The ath5k driver is currently being used, as I have removed ath_hal, ath_pci, and wlan from being loaded.

The interface comes up fine, as it shows up in both iwconfig and ifconfig.  However,

iwlist wlan0 scan

returns no results.  I've tried setting the essid, ap, channel, etc. to known values, and dhcpcd still times out and falls back to the IPV4LL address, which is of no use to me.

Any ideas?  This is the only network adapter that this laptop has, so I can't do anything else until I get it up and running.

Thanks all.

I had the same problem with ath5k, so I switched to madwifi (where I have also many problems with Atheros, but now after one week hard work it seems to work).
