[SOLVED] openoffice broken menus and icons

I just installed openoffice and the menus and icons are all messed up. Regardless of which application I open; calc, writer etc, The menu icons cannot be seen unless I hover the mouse over a specific icon and then that icon will appear and then disappear when the mouse moves away from the icon. The same thing is true for the actual menus but they are visible when first opening the app until I hover the mouse over a menu item and then they all disappear as well but if I click on the location where the menu item is then that menus drop down list appears and then disappears when the mouse moves away.

any thoughts anyone?

I'm running x86_64

Re: [SOLVED] openoffice broken menus and icons

Thanks ploub but that doesn't change anything unfortunately. I still have no menu items or icons.

You did raise a good point though. I forgot to mention I'm running KDE 4.2 ;-)

Re: [SOLVED] openoffice broken menus and icons

Thanks brazzmonkey.

putting:

export SAL_GTK_USE_PIXMAPPAINT=1

in either one of

/etc/profile
~/.kde4/env/gtk-qt-engine.rc.sh

worked for me.

Interestingly, at least one other menu I have found is still broken. Tools -> Customize. Very bad rendering with black vertical lines. Meh! I can live with that.

Sorry everyone for posting the ten millionth repeat of the same problem. When I searched the forums I saw the headings with words like 'crash' and 'doesn't work' etc and I thought they were to do with ... openoffice crashing or not working (to my simple mind 'not working' = not starting or can't write etc). I should have looked more carefully.

Thanks again guys for your help.
