Hello there.
I'm trying to get my 3 3G Broadband connection up and running using the NetworkManager from testing. I've installed and configured NetworkManager 0.7 from testing so that it connects to my wireless network as usual, and have also installed wvdial and ppp.
When I plug in my device, a new option 'Auto Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection' appears in NetworkManager, which seems to indicate that Arch is aware of the. However, selecting this option either causes the NM icon to flick briefly to the 'connecting' icon, then back to disconnected; or for the system to freeze completely.
IIRC, Ubuntu displayed a menu of possible providers, and it connected from there. At a wild guess, I need to install something extra which provides this list of provider presets, but can't find out what it is.
My system is a HP Mini 700 with a basic openbox setup from the standard repositories, and NetworkManager 0.7 (and dependencies) from testing.
Thanks for any help.

I've also had a similar problem. However, I suspect it only crashes when your 3g Password is not stored on the card. Reading through the ppp logs everything went fine until it tried to authenticate.
Might be something to check out.

I believe Ubuntu uses that.

Thanks for the link. From there I've made my way to http://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/Mo … eProviders, downloaded the list of service provicers and done the old autoconf-i/configure/make/install routine on them.
This copied two files:
/usr/local/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.dtd
/usr/local/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml
But NetworkManager still doesn't seem have any list of service providers.
I've also tried the vodaphone connect tool in the past, but that did something to my other networking devices, making them unable to see my internet gateway.
Anyway, the serviceproviders.xml contains only a measly about of information for 3(UK) anyway, so I'm going to try and configure it manually.
<provider>
<name>3</name>
<gsm>
<apn>three.co.uk</apn>
</gsm>
</provider>
I'll report back on how far I get.
Edit: Typo.

Hi thebaron
i've also tried to use my huawei (the e220) with networkmanager 0.7. Getting the same results as you , i.e it seems to detect an auto gsm connection, tries to connect, but no success.
Just to share my journey thus far, i have:
- installed wvdial
- installed ppp (started the ppp daemon before dhcdbd and networkmanager via rc.conf)
btw, nm0.7 is now available ha s been promoted from testing repo.
Also, i have checked with just using wvdial.
With a single entry in my /etc/wvdial.conf for my provider, i was able to get online.
However, to be able to use wvdial, i had to disable networkmanager (ie avoided starting up dhcdbd and networkmanager).
With NM 0.7, i have not included any provider info, so expect this is part of my problem(?)
So at the moment, i am sticking with the more manual set up of wvdial + wicd.
But am happy to help you test any ideas - it will be good to improve the wiki entry for huawei with a section for NM 0.7
ciao,

Hi venger. Unfortunately I got no where getting the list into NetworkManager, and have been using wvdial and ppp since.
My only thought is that the folder needs to be under /usr rather than /usr/local, but I'm not sure if that will work.

Guys, just in case, you can always use gnome-ppp/kppp (or wvdial) to deal with the e220. For me is simpler to handle wicd+gnome-ppp than networkmanager. I dunno, but it tends to break my system, making things harder instead of helping.
If you want the details of this configuration, I can post them if you wish.
They say that if you play a Win cd backward you hear satanic messages. That's nothing! 'cause if you play it forwards, it installs windows.

Huawei e172 - VodafoneES
I already tried using wvdial... and now i'm trying the networkmanager... but no luck...
When i was using ubuntu everything went ok... don't understand where is the arch problem... the only thing that i note is different is that my networkmanager in arch doesn´t have the tab where in ubuntu i change the dns settings...
