Weird Xorg problem

Since I moved Arch installation to my new laptop, I'm experiencing some strange problems with my X. Everything works fine after system boot, but once I logout from desktop or kill X with Ctrl+Alt+Del gdm doesn't start anymore and I get Xorg error report with no errors!!

Re: Weird Xorg problem

did you play around with the inittab file anytime? Make sure you have a respawn of the gdm in it.

Re: Weird Xorg problem

Are you using the intel driver by any chance?

Re: Weird Xorg problem

Post xorg.conf please.

Do you have the nv driver installed, even if you're not using it? I once had something similar.

Re: Weird Xorg problem

I still didn't manage to solve this problem. Does anyone have an idea on what should I try. X is behaving oddly on this card with the nvidia driver. When I resume from suspend I can't get picture on the monitor as well. I've configured the hibernate script to unload nvidia module but the problem persists....
With this I still have the annoying problem with log off or shutdown of X server...
It is making my OS unusable in some situations. I can't log off from window manager, but instead have to reboot the computer... sad

Re: Weird Xorg problem

Exact same problem here. I have a thinkpad t61 with the same video card NVS 140M.
I think I've had this problem since I switched to x64 in mid December last year. I'm rather inclined to think it just coincided with some nvidia driver release then to think this is x64 specific issue but I wonder what does ux&lx run?

Re: Weird Xorg problem

When I started the topic I used an i686 installation from my old laptop and had that problem. I recently installed 64 bit version and the problem is still present. So el-ave the problem is not in the x86_64 it is probably in the driver.

Is It normal to have 2 entries for the NVIDIA device .
I can see you have input hotplugging enabled . Why don't you try a minimal xorg.conf :

Re: Weird Xorg problem

Yeah, that was a mistake made by copying some content from a different file but I removed the first entry ages ago and the problem persists. I even tryed with Option "AutoAddDevices" "False", but in this case my keyboard and mouse don't work...

Re: Weird Xorg problem

nvidia has a good config utility called nvidia-xconfig. From the VC do

nvidia-xconfig

using the root. It goes without saying that you should backup your current xorg.conf before doing this, although the utility does back it up for you, you might want to name it so that you remember.

It will generate a new xorg.conf. I have always found that a xorg generated by nvidia-xcofig works better than one by hwd -a or Xorg -- configure if you have an nvidia card

Re: Weird Xorg problem

My suggestion was to try xorg.conf with this section only .

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName "Quadro NVS 140M"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"

EndSection

Maybe you should double check that you have nvidia-utils installed too .

Re: Weird Xorg problem

I tried both approaches, but they don't solve the problem. The xorg.conf from earlier was generated using nvidia-xconfig but was modified with some things later on. I tried the pure file generaed by it and the problem was still present.

And you have followed the wiki for the HAL and PolicyKit issues correct?

Re: Weird Xorg problem

I'm having the same problem as the OP.  I do not use a login manager, though.  When I boot up, I type startx and it runs fine.  But if I Ctrl+Alt+Backspace back to the console then try startx again without a reboot, I just get a blank screen.
I also have a different video card from the OP, an integrated ATI 3100 for which I am using Catalyst.

The latest Xorg 1.6 release has now disabled the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X. You can re-enable it of course by an option in the Xorg.conf. I dont rbr the option right now. At work on a windows machine sad

Search the forums, there are threads on it.

Well I'm still on 1.5, but that's not the issue anyway...I can get out of X ok, it's getting back into it without a reboot.

Re: Weird Xorg problem

Try with the xf86-video-nv driver, and try with an xorg.conf generated by hwd -xa (try modifying that config too, and try the nv driver with tweaked nvidia-xconfig and with tweaked hwd... also try with Xorg -configure).

Re: Weird Xorg problem

I've tryed everything and this problem is still present. The only thing I didn't try is to disable X hotpluging. How can I do this? I've read some post that this could be the problem with intel wireless firware or thinkpad-acpi module. I anyone familiar with this maybe?

Re: Weird Xorg problem

I've installed Zenwalk to test if the problem will occur on it and it didn't. Truth is that X takes longer than usual to respawn but it works. Then I used xorg.conf from Zenwalk on Arch to see what will happen and unfortunately nothing changed. Seems like the problem is not in the configuration file. There seems to be no solution for this sad
