How to set up firestarter with wicd

Hi there,

I want to install firestarter on my laptop under KDE 4.2 and I was wondering how to do that. I've already read the documentation on the firestarter website, but I have some questions:

1.) When I start Firestarter from the KDE 4 menu, I get a "Insufficient privileges" dialog. I can start it from Konsole as root, but then how do I get it on startup in my system tray for my common mortal non-root user account?

2.) I'm using wicd and my daemons in rc.conf look like this:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal !network netfs alsa crond wicd)

Do I just add the firestarter daemon at the end? I've found this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org:80/viewtopic.php?id=61773 talking about the same issue but for networkmanager. How can firestarter run, if wicd hasn't even connected to a network?

3.) In Firestarter I have to specify the interface that's connected to the internet. How can I specify two interfaces? Sometimes I access the internet via my wireless (wlan0) and sometimes via my wired connection (eth0). However it seems as if you could only choose one interface for "internet" and then the other one has to be "local". Is there a trick, I don't know?

Cheers,
Blackhole

I'm still hoping that someone's stumbles across this thread by accident. ;-)

Re: How to set up firestarter with wicd

blackhole,
I just found your posting. There is a very simple solution to it.
1. follow the instructions for WICD on the wiki.
2. Left click on Wicd in the systray or open it with whatever method you prefer.
3. Under the Network Tab, click the little expand arrow for whichever connection you are using.
4. Click on the button labeled scripts.
5. Put in your password
6. In the post connection script box, put the following:

/etc/rc.d/firestarter start

7. Make sure firestarter is not in rc.conf
8. Reboot and firestarter will now work with Wicd

Good Luck big_smile
