How many OpenBox users actually use obmenu and obconf?

I know this should probably go in "Try This" or "Topics going nowhere", but since those are read only , maybe some mod can move it over there.

So, how many OB users actually use obmenu and obconf?

For me, although I did install them -- well because the wiki said so -- I find that I always use a text editor to simply modify the menu.xml or rc.xml manually.
I have nice little aliases to pull up those files.

How about you guys?

Re: How many OpenBox users actually use obmenu and obconf?

I use obmenu because of obm-xdg. I don't use the GUI at all. I only use obconf to preview themes. As much as I don't like looking at XML, I do all of my editing by hand.

i use obmenu for the initial setup.  After that I usually just edit the xml by hand.  I usually only use obconf to change the theme.

Yeah, me too. (almost forgot I had obconf 'till you reminded me, I'm a couple weeks into my first Arch install and I been busy, whew)

+1 obconf

about obmenu: tried it once and decided to edit menu.xml by hand wink

Obconf is very handy and is used often, even though manual edit is required for some tasks. Obmenu on the other hand is a no go.

I hand edit my rc.mxl and menu.xml. I use Obconf to preview themes too, and to set some of the graphical stuff.

I use obconf for initial setup, although I add key shortcuts by hand. I've disabled the root menu, i.e. don't use obmenu at all.

Obconf just for previewing, installing, changing themes. Never used obmenu, menu.xml and rc.xml aren't that hard to edit

I use all three of obmenu, obconf and obkey ... and there again about half of the time I don't. Depends on what I have/how much to edit in the .xml files. Vive la choix! smile

Ditto.  I usually edit rc after using obkeys 'cause it tends to put everything in one long line and that bugs me.

Then the point of using obkeys being? wink

I have a hard time remembering everything ob can do, so the big drop down list in obkeys helps. tongue

I use obconf and obmenu for a quick change sometimes.
Naturally, you dig in deep into xml when you want to do something these two can't, but still, they're really handy...

Obconf, yes. It's handy.
Obmenu, no. I tried it, it didn't run, so I just got to tweaking the menu make by menumaker (if I know the name, and it's not long, I just use bashrun, so the menu is more a fallback). Now I haven't had a good reason to try it again.

I find Obconf handy to change themes, but I don't use Obmenu. I edit rc by hand and use a bash script to generate a menu

Looks like I'm the opposite of most of the others here, I use obmenu to edit menu.xml, but I always hand-edit rc.xml and don't use obconf.

Re: How many OpenBox users actually use obmenu and obconf?

When you have set up Openbox, the few times you need to change anything is when it comes to themes and fonts. In both those cases obconf is way quicker than manually editing rc.xml.

But the menufile is a little bit different since it serves only one purpuse. In this case manually editing it compared to obmenu makes no difference in time or effort. Since this is the case I find a gui unneeded.

In the end it all boils down to manual edit vs gui. If a gui provides faster access and better controll then why not use it?

I use both obconf and obmenu, I guess due to my lazy/practical side.  I hate editing XML, which is no doubt also a factor.

Re: How many OpenBox users actually use obmenu and obconf?

Like a few others, sometimes I use them and sometimes I edit by hand. Obconf is handy for a quick change of theme if I'm trying out a new GTK theme. And similarly, Obmenu is useful to quickly add a newly installed program to the menu (I don't like the xdg layout). But Obmenu in particular is limited - you can't move submenus to somewhere else in the hierarchy, for instance. Manual editing is the only way to get full control.
