I am using the Awesome window manager. How would I set my wallpaper to be a certain Bible verse/quote that would be generated dynamically with custom fg/bg colors?
Could I run a bash script with a urxvt terminal as my background?

You could write a script to output the verse/quote and put it into conky (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Conky).
Just set your background to a solid color and then configure your conky to your liking.
