HD3850 AGP w/ fglrx

After installing catalyst from this thread (he chose not to post it to AUR for some reason) and setting up X, I get only a black screen which appears to be frozen. Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't take me back to vc1, at any rate. After I reboot /var/log/Xorg.0.log is an empty file. However, in /var/log/errors.log I see the following:

[fglrx:IRQMGR_initialize] *ERROR* Failed to enable MSI in kernel, return value = -22

Googling it gave me one result... on Ubuntu... in French.

My xorg.conf is here.

The very unusual thing is that it worked the first time I tried it. I stepped away for a few minutes and when I came back it was doing this.

I tried the Catalyst from community before this, but didn't have any luck with that either.

Edit:

Come to think of it, I actually installed kdemod between it working and not working. Would kdm try to start when start X with 'X'? If so, can I test X w/o kdm and w/o installing another login manager?

how are you starting kdm? from the DAEMONS array? If so, simply disable it by putting a ! in front of it.

See if it behaves without kdm.

Re: HD3850 AGP w/ fglrx

I'm starting kdm with inittab. I set it back to runlevel 3 when it started misbehaving, so the daemon shouldn't be running. That's why I was asking if 'X' triggered kdm.

Edit:

changing fglrx --> vesa in xorg.conf results in the same thing. Xorg.0.log is still empty. I'm going to try removing kdemod, I suppose.

can you post your rc.conf file? you can simply disable loading the MSI module and see if that works.

Just add '!msi'?

lsmod | grep msi gives me nothing anyway.

Removing kdemod didn't seem to have an effect either.

Well if you don't already have MSI in the MODULES array, then there is no point adding a !msi.

Are you also running compiz on startup? Its known to give black/white screens sometimes. If you are running it, try disabling it by running the default kde window manager - kwin

Re: HD3850 AGP w/ fglrx

No compiz, though I'm not sure that matters since I'm not even getting to KDM.

Like I said, I already removed kdemod anyway. Should be going to the standard black X test screen now, I think?

Edit:

After seeing that Xorg -configure caused a crash as well, I removed all three catalyst packages. Now X loads with vesa, but still with no mouse/keyboard. I do get the the X in the center of the screen though. The Xorg.0.log is still empty.

Since (I think?) X uses hal for the input devices, I tried restarting hal and got the following:

::Stopping Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
::Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]

I don't see anything helpful in daemons.log, errors.log, or dmesg|tail. Not sure where else to check.

HAL needs to start before anything else does. So why dont you remove the "backgrounding" that you have for HAL and then reboot.

Re: HD3850 AGP w/ fglrx

I got hal working by re-installing actually - not sure what the deal there was. I disabled the backgrounding in rc.conf anyway, just in case.

I guess I'm not going to be getting any 3D acceleration from Arch for the time being. (unless somebody has an idea)

At any rate, X seems to be working with vesa now. Hopefully radeonhd won't give me any trouble. Thank you for all your help.
