Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

you seem to have 2 errors wrt modules record and type1.

Try commenting out those two lines in your xorg.conf under the modules section. Also, try using a xorg.conf generated by hwd, before you change it over to the one generated by aticonfig.

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

I used a fresh xorg.conf generated by hwd, and commented out the two modules.

Now I get a green-ish bar, of what appear to be graphical artifacts with some blue in it when I type startx. I cant ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+f1. I had to reset the machine..

What WM/DE are you using. have you configured it correctly?

Well yes and no. X does not need any WM/DE, but you will need to install one to be able to do anything worthwhile.

do you have a .xinitrc file? What is that file starting up? If you do not have a WM/DE, you may just want to put exec xterm in the .xinitrc to see if X starts up correctly. If it does, then you can go ahead and install your favorite WM/DE

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

There is no fatal error, you should only find the right settings for your graphics card / monitor. Set resolution, color depth and the lot to correct values.

I also thought the name 'fglrx' was obsolete and replaced by 'catalyst' (which will not be available in the main repo's).

If you cannot get fglrx/catalyst to work, try the radeon or radeonhd-driver and if all else fails, try the vesa-driver...

Zl.

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

running X w/o a WM/DE should default to twm (tims window manager) with some ugly white xterms and a clock.  with xorg 1.5.3 you should be able to run it w/o xorg.conf entirely and see something.  then go from there.  you won't need the mouse/keyboard entries, just the monitor/screen section if you want to specify your driver/resolution/refresh rates, or other options.  try it w/o a xorg.conf and see what's in the log.  then try X -configure and see if you get a better xorg.conf out of that.

looking a second time i see in your xorg.conf, i see duplicate screen and device entries.  one ati and one vesa.  i'm guessing the vesa entries came in with hwd -xa and the ati entries with aticonfig --initial.  i think you should remove xorg.conf and just do one or the other, these may be conflicting.

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

Ok, I made a backup of xorg.conf and id touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then, I did aticonfig --initial, and I get what appears to be tims window manager, the ugly white xterms and a clock indeed, but it takes a while to start x, it sits at a black screen for 25 seconds or so.

Atleast there is some progress smile

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

hmm 25 seconds is a while... check Xorg.0.log to try and find the slowdown

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE # for errors
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW # for warnings

i mentioned that two posts up, he's fixed it... now we have a 25 second delay in starting X.

Fragger,

good that you have no EE's, the WW seems to be the slowdown though.  maybe someone who uses ati (or catalyst?) can lend a hand here.

Yep.. Im glad I got it running, just installed DWM, works nice except the slowdown.
So I hope someone with ATI experience can help smile

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

First of all, I can't help much as I am a Linux newb but I compared my Xorg log with Fragger's. The only difference is that mine is missing this line:

(WW) fglrx(0): GetVBEMode failed

If I remembered correctly, I used to see that message a long time ago when catalyst update broke X. I uninstalled catalyst driver and reinstalled it; and somehow it magically fixed everything. Yours seem to slow down for a different reason though.

I have both tried radeonhd and the opensource drivers today, they all have the same error...
Any help would be awesome.

Re: [UNSOLVED]Fresh install Xorg problems

Slow X can be many things, but as a starter I would check if the hostname is set properly. A bad /etc/hosts for example, can make X quite sluggish...

If your ~/.xinitrc doesn't have a WM or DE listed, you won't get a WM. I sometimes run without a window manager, which is why I know. If you don't have a ~/.xinitrc, when you get the system-wide one when X is loaded, which defaults to loading Twm, three xterms, and a Xclock (IIRC).

By the way, Twm originally stood for Tom's Window Manager (named after Tom LaStrange). According to Wikipedia, it later become Tab Window Manager and now it is Timeless Window Manager.
