Several Issues in Laptop: keyboard, mouse, X, hdd...

Subject: Several Issues in Laptop: keyboard, mouse, X, hdd...

Hi there!
I've been using Arch on my desktop for almost a year with no problems, so yesterday I decided to install it on my laptop -a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo SI 2636 -after checking that Ubuntu 8.04 live cd was working smoothly, even with compiz effects, function keys and synaptics. I chose english and spanish locales and a spanish keyboard map.

However i had several problems with the keyboard and the touchpad mainly, all Xorg related.

First of all I'll start with the keyboard. I used the xorg.conf generated by hwd and the keyboard section is like this:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Keyboard0"
        Driver "keyboard"
        Option "CoreKeyboard"
        Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
        Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
        Option "XkbLayout" "es"
        Option "XkbVariant" ""
EndSection

The keyboard works fine but the Function keys don't, only the Brightness keys do so.

Since these function keys were working smoothly under Ubuntu I looked at the xorg.conf used by this distribution and.. it is almost empty! As ubuntu states on their doc website, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XORGHardy it is intended to force Xorg to find the best hardware configuration available.

Anyway, I copied the whole keyboard section and the only difference was the driver used: 'keyboard' vs 'kbd' and the XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch". The XkbLayout was the same. Restarted the Xserver and actually the Function keys were working -all of them!-, but I had my keyboard in English.

Going back to the driver keyboard, which was generated by hwd, is the only way to have the keyboard in spanish. I also tried to just add the XkbOption but nothing happened.

1. Is there any way to get both things -the Function keys and the spanish map- working?

Secondly, the touchpad. hwd generated 3 sections for a PS/2 mouse, a Serial and a USB mouse, but the only one working is this, the other were no detected.

# PS/2 Mouse not detected
# Serial Mouse not detected
        InputDevice "USB Mouse" "CorePointer"

and

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "USB Mouse"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
        Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
        Option "Buttons" "5"
EndSection

Since I have a Synaptics device and it works under Ubuntu (tapping, sliding, everything!), I'd like to use it, so I installed and loaded the module synaptics and added the section mentioned in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Syn … figuration

Of course I had no results. I tried the second option for ALPS touchpads (in case mine was one of those) and in both cases I can't tap with the touchpad. I have to use the buttons. I also tried the almost-empty xorg.conf from Ubuntu and same happens, so I reverted to the hwd xorg file. At least I can tap, but still want to use Synaptics!

Although I installed xf86-input-evdev, note that I have input hotplugging disabled:

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"
        Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"

EndSection

2. What can i do to make touchpad work properly??

3. I've noticed these lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Does anyone know what and/or why?

4. My HDD was making a click noise almost twice per minute, and I was really worried so I found out about the hard disk issue. Installed smarttoolsmonitor and obviously checked the Load Cycle Count: 674 in the 14 hours I've had my laptop, so tried the hdparm -B 254 option and it worked.
Now i've noticed there's a wiki page about laptops and all that, but how can i add the hdparm command at startup? Should i fill it on /etc/rc.local or /etc/hdparm.conf? (or should i install pm-utils, powertop and all that?).

5. When I shutdown the system I don't see any messages. I just get a blank screen and after a few seconds, the system goes off. I've tried to switch to another tty but it doesn't respond and nothing happens. However if I login on tty1 and halt from there, everything goes fine and I'm able to read the messages. How can I see those messages when shutting down from gnome??

Many thanks in advance guys!
BTW, if it helps I attach my current xorg.conf

Re: Several Issues in Laptop: keyboard, mouse, X, hdd...

install acpi-support to get your Fn keys working.

Check this link for synaptics touchpad. You do have a synaptic touchpad, its mentioned in your Xorg.log. I only had to load synaptics and tapping and everything worked for me. You might have to do some additional configuration.

Thanks for the answer Inxsible.
I managed to solve the hard disk issue, adding the hdparm option to rc.local. Now the load cycle doesn't increment so dramatically. Touchpad isn't working yet and I tried the ACPI option for the hotkeys, as you mentioned and as I read on the wiki. However, acpi_listen just detects 4/8 hotkeys, so I'm a bit confused with what I should try next.

I still don't get any output messages nor the screen goes to any vc after shutting down or restarting the system. The screen goes blank and nothing happens, it just shuts down or restart, and it upsets me!!

Any other ideas guys?
Thank you very much!

Try changing the protocol for the mouse in Xorg.conf to auto:

Option "Protocol" "auto"

It's important to know if hotplugging is enabled or disabled to have the proper setup configs for synaptics.

As I mentioned before, hotplugging is disabled. The touchpad is working, but not as a synaptics device.  Never mind... i can live with that. The only thing that keeps upsetting me is the lack of the shutdown messages. I can't even switch to a vc when i press the shutdown dialog in Gnome. The screen goes blank, the keyboard does not respond and i all i can do is wait till it goes off.

Am I the only one suffering this?
