Is video card quality important when running openbox/pekwm?

I have a geforce fx 5200 (not a terrible card...) but I want dual screens and have a matrox g400 capable of that, will there be a noticable difference? No gaming or anything...

Its always better to use proprietary drivers, unless you want only open source software on your machine.

Dual screen support is good for the nvidia drivers. Go with the geforce. I have no clue as to the linux support for matrox.

Well the thing is, the geforce is single display, and it is AGP. I also have a tnt riva (Old nvidia card) that uses "nv" but they don't seem to want to work together to well. The Matrox on the other hand, work with dual screen since it has dual vga-out

Oh I was thinking you wanted something like TwinView which nvidia does quite well.

Unfortunately I believe you will notice a significant decrease in 2D performance, which has very little to do with the window manager.  Things like...menus, scrolling, and drop-down widgets.

EDIT: At least... *I* would notice it.  But I'm really picky about such things.

Well I can't seem to get xorg to cooperate with both nvidia cards, i have the nvidia 173xx for the geforce using "nvidia" and for the older riva tnt2 i tried both vesa and nv and neither seem to work while both cards are in use

Re: Is video card quality important when running openbox/pekwm?

matrox can be tricky on linux, imex. I finally ditched it for ati (ugh) and now nvidia, which is a joy compared to both of those. No problem with dual screen nvidia, just add the twinview options to xorg.conf and it seems to work perfectly (edit - disregard on twinview, just noticed the single vga output comment above).

is there any reason why two nvidia cards with two different drivers wouldn't work?
