I know the Xlib errors can be ignored. I was more concerned about the Alsa errors that I get. As far as I know, the sound works perfectly on my machine. I would just like to know why I get these errors then, and if possible to get rid of them.

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

You bumped your own thread? YOU'RE BANNED YOU BASTARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thoroughly confused about what you posted above. It looks like it starts as /var/log/Xorg.0.log, then it goes into a bunch of ALSA stuff. Am I hallucinating?

--EDIT--

I am hallucinating. -1 for not reading properly. You're unbanned.

Thanks for unbanning ! Would have to get a new account everytime i post then...how would you keep track of me then? maybe ban my ip  -- i shouldn't say anything more !  shhhh!!!!

The above is just all the output when I start my WM. At the console instead of startx i did

 startx 2> start.txt

and btw, the alsa errors keep popping up every so often. After using the mentioned startx, I was in the same session for quite some hours and the start.txt file has increased in size and has multiple instaces of those errors in "bunches". So what I am saying is that the above ALSA errors get repeated over and over after some interval.

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

I just searched for two random selections from your messages above. To my surprise I got hits (normally I would have to remove line numbers and such). Every single one of them had to do with Skype, including in this thread here which I found through Google:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=63774

I don't know if you have a Skype connection, but there are solutions in some of the hits that I got from this line:

ALSA lib pcm.c:2202:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.hdmi

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

Yeah I had seen that particular thread before posting. No love. I have seen other threads for it on the web too, but none offer a definite solution. I will try and look into it more tomorrow morning.. Time for bed now -- 1:51 am. I got to go to work tomorrow.

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

Ok. I had followed this mpd wiki to be able to lower mpd volume without lowering system sound. I had done this long long back when I didn't know much about mpd and alsa and I think I just copied over the /etc/asound.conf over as is in the Arch installation. Obviously all the ctls and mixers mentioned there are not available on my system.

Now, if I remove the /etc/asound.conf file, I lose sound in all my apps. Skype still sees the real sound card and once I select the appropriate one..everything works. but VLC etc just dont give any sound output. How do I get sound in those apps without having to use the /etc/asound.conf file?

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

Alright...I think I screwed up my sound by trying out different things that I probably shouldn't have been.

How do I re-install alsa to get the default config back? I tried re-installing alsa-lib and alsa-utils but that didn't change anything. Also I couldn't remove alsa-lib because other apps have dependencies on it. Can I re-install alsa without having to remove all the sound apps and get a default slate to begin with?

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

Reinstalling won't solve anything here.

- check /etc/rc.conf for 'alsa' in DAEMONS (should be there) and 'snd-*' stuff in MODULES (shouldn't)
- check /etc/modprobe.conf & /etc/modprobe.d/* for anything sound-related
- delete /etc/asound*
- 'locate asound' to check if there are other configs lying around in /etc or your homedir

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

alright !

1) DAEMONS has alsa, MODULES doesnt have anything sound related -- infact it only has !iTCO_wdt which I need to blacklist for udev to actually complete.
2) modprobe.conf is empty and i renamed /etc/modprobe.d/sound
3) renamed /etc/asound.conf and /etc/asound.state.
4) locate shows me this :

locate asound
/etc/asound.conf
/etc/asound.state
/usr/include/alsa/asoundef.h
/usr/include/alsa/asoundlib.h
/usr/include/alsa/sound/asound_fm.h
/usr/include/linux/ultrasound.h
/usr/include/sound/asound.h
/usr/include/sound/asound_fm.h
/usr/include/sys/asoundlib.h
/usr/include/sys/ultrasound.h
/usr/lib/libasound.so
/usr/lib/libasound.so.2
/usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0
/usr/lib/klibc/include/linux/ultrasound.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/include/linux/ultrasound.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/include/sound/asound.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/include/sound/asound_fm.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/include/sound/asoundef.h
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/sound/oss/dmasound
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/sound/oss/dmasound/Kconfig
/var/abs/extra/ecasound
/var/abs/extra/ecasound/ChangeLog
/var/abs/extra/ecasound/PKGBUILD
/var/lib/pacman/sync/extra/ecasound-2.5.2-1
/var/lib/pacman/sync/extra/ecasound-2.5.2-1/depends
/var/lib/pacman/sync/extra/ecasound-2.5.2-1/desc

I know I can ignore anything under var. Do I have to remove/rename the sound related files under /usr/lib /usr/include and /usr/src/linux-2.6.28 ?

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

No, /usr is off-limits for almost everything in general.
If you had something in /etc/modprobe.d/ you need to get it out of the directory; names won't matter there.

Re: [SOLVED]Startup errors

Alright. Thanks byte. I got sound working again. Now I am trying out moc/cmus/cplay and quodlibet, to see which one I like.

I am looking for 2 things :
1) Global shortcuts to control music playing. Not too fancy -- just play pause next and prev are good enough.
2) To be able to lower the volume for that app wihout lowering the system volume.

Do you know if any of the above can do those 2 things?

I guess I can start a new thread for that. Thanks for your help byte.
