Auto search within network

So i go to school in a university, and in the dorms. We are not on the local network per se, we have actual internet ip addys. I have an router with 2 computers in my LAN, and id like to be able to do something like, "ping computername" and it knows it needs to default to "computername.schoolsite.edu"

There must be some way to do this with DNS or something, instead of manually adding a bunch of machines to the host file.
