searching WM with "number windows" feature...

Hi,
Do you know WM with "number windows" feature? I mean I can number windows (e.g. on first desktop FF = 1, Pidgin=2, rtorrent = 3 etc.) and then just type alt+1/alt+2...  to change active window. Shortcut alt-tab is useless if I have opened many windows...

Re: searching WM with "number windows" feature...

Openbox does that and I think even Fluxbox does. You can switch between tags using the Super key + number
EDIT: This moves between desktops...After careful reading I don't think that was what you wanted. But a workaround would be to simply start the apps on different desktops using <applications> tag in rc.xml

almost all tiling wms do that as well. Try out musca, dwm, ratpoison, wmii, awesome, xmonad just to name a few.

Openbox doesn't (I didn't find anywhere something like tag windows in openbox).

I have tried awesome. Maybe I'm blind but I really see in manual anything with marking windows.
Tagging virtual desktops isn't what I want. Just to be sure watch this image: http://www.divshare.com/download/7037668-8a8 (that squares are windows wink )

edit:
why do I need this feature?
I have 7 terminals on one desktop. I use mouse just sometimes so I everything do with keyboard. Choosing right terminal takes much time smile

Can't access the damn page from my workplace. My workplace deems it unsafe enough to block it. I guess I will have to wait until I get home sad

Oh. I know what you meant before seeing the picture.

How about starting the 7 terminals on 7 different desktops..and then using the Super+num key to move around. That is definitely doable.

If not, it will be a tad difficult to assign numbers to particular apps..what with the apps may start in different order and if you have 7 terminals...they are all terminals - so how are you going to assign numbers to differentiate between them?

It can be done -- no doubt- with a custom script..which monitors what apps are started..and assign a number to them...and then your WM would use that script to decide which window to move to. This will be limited to max 10 I guess. (0-9)

Re: searching WM with "number windows" feature...

using the 7 terminals on 7 different desktops is unacceptably.
They are all terminals, but every window is unique (e.g. pid).

RATPOISON!
You have a `windows` list ordered from first to last opened window. Selection is done using corresponding window number.

Binding the F-keys on the top-level keymap to select window 1-12 is a pretty slick way to work too. In StumpWM you can do one better, and set up your program launching keys to select certain programs if already running — so ^t e would start Emacs if not running, but focus it if it was running.

Re: searching WM with "number windows" feature...

I have tried StumpWM and it has a lot more features than Ratpoison (I believe the StumpWM dev that started it is also the main Ratpoison dev).
People say Stump is the new Ratpoison but I find it hard to switch to it because of the LISP sad
It can be quite hard to install too (I couldn't have done it without the #stumpwm / #lisp  people)

Hei, that's my config! smile Yes, it is also possible with fvwm. However with this approach you have to assign the numbers "manually". Of course it could be extended, so that the numbering gets done automatically, but it is not implemented in the above config.
