g'day all,
I am a new convert from ubuntu to Archie. I have spent about 5hours 2day to install whole suite of Arch/apps and bring it at level with my ubuntu box. It went smooth. Now I am running gnome with all my apps, dvd play, thunderbird and all.
Its great, its fast and so far I havent had any issues (I dont mind the cli by the way. I worked in dos for a long time)
I just have 2 niggling issues. The sound is muted every time after I reboot.
How can I add vlc to the right-click context menu, so I can right click on a video file or dvd and start it using vlc.
cheers

make sure you read over this part in the alsa wiki.
I don't use gnome though, so can't say much about the context menu.

Welcome to Arch. I have no idea either about gnome but as for the sound it depends wether or not you're using ALSA or OSS.

Once you verify that sound is working, add either alsa, or oss to your DAEMONS array.
Arch Linux + sway
Debian Testing + GNOME/sway
NetBSD 64-bit + Xfce

This sounds like it could be the cause of your problem...make sure you have it added!
While you're probably aware, the DAEMONS array is located in /etc/rc.conf
good luck!
(non gnome user here too sadly...consider this a bump for that problem!)
good luck

I'm not a gnome user but I have nautilus installed .
Right-click(on the file) ---> Properties ----> Open With ----> Add ---> Choose Vlc .
Was that your problem ?

hi guys,
thanks to everyone for responding quickly and for the welcome.
The sound prob was fixed as per above suggestions after adding alsa to the daemons list in rc.conf. For vlc I am still trying.
In Arch the start up and shutdown times are very short. I am already using 2.6.29 kernel (dont have to wait for 6 months).
So far its great.
thanks again

LOL
Well, in that case, right clikc the file and go to properties, there is a tab that says open with, select the application of your preference there. If you just installed vlc and are not seeing it displayed there, run as root, update-desktop-database.
Edit: I need another coffee this was answered already.

Long time not working under GNOME, but nautilus should "memorize" the VLC app..
