Okay I have an ipod touch and Im syncing music vis ssh with gtk pod. The oly problem is that gtkpod is so SLOW. It takes forever from when I press a button to add music until the file browser will pop up. Scolling up and down the list is like trying to play a game at 1fps. Not to mention the pure overload of moving through a list with ONLY 50 SONGS is so much it will down right lock up. I have a 3.16 ghz processor dual core with an nvidia 8600 GT on arch64 why is it so SLOW. I really would like gtkpod alot if it worked right it syncs about 20 -30 minutes of music in under 1 minute! But its driving me up a wall. is there some alternative? PLEASE NOTE i have an iPod TOUCH I can not sync using regular ipod programs it can only be done ssh. Thx.

If you hate it so much....don't use it man !
I know this probably doesn't help you, but you just gotta accept the fact that there are some things that another OS might be better at (although not due to Linux's fault), especially when it comes to proprietary stuff/software.
Don't know what your situation is, but if you have windows installed, I would jsut use that for syncing ipod touch. Eventually the linux world will get smarter on how to sync with touch/iphone fast enough. Until then, however.....
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

The thing is i have to cause its the only thing that does sync with my ipod. And I actually think linux syncs better. Without a doubt much much faster I can sync an hour of music in about 2 minutes wireless while listening to music and playing a gameboy game on my ipod and i dont even have to reboot it to take effect!.(I sometime sync like that just to prove a point to my self! not really ) But the way its done now i have to kill widows compatibility to do that on linux and i dont have a windows comp anyway screw itunes DRM crap.
Thank you for the effort though

I recommend you check out:

and the respective package in the AUR.

The old version of gtkpod used to take forever to load the browser but the latest version is quick so I don't quite know what you are complaining about.

I got the libgpod-svn and the gtkpod-svn from the AUR I compiled them with the proper make flags and it made a HUGE difference its as smooth as nautilus no problems at all! I might add that note to the wiki.

gtkpod drove me insane lots of times...
dont know what DE you are using, but I uploaded some music from a friends Ubuntu-PC with rhythmbox and was stunned by how easy and fast it worked. maybe worth a try.

I compiled the pkgs from the AUR
gtkpod-svn
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13299
libgpod-svn
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?I … hans=&SeB=
Here is the wiki on Makepkg.conf
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Makepkg.conf
It says
Note: for gcc 4.3.0 for Core2Duo (or Core2Quad) and x86_64 set CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe"
The current gcc PKG in the repos is 4.4.0 I use those makeflags there. Also I found the gtk engine can also make a difference I use aurora which is know to be slow but honestly I have never been able to tell a difference. On the gtkpod in the repos the gtk engine made a difference I switched to murrine and it made a noticeable difference, But after I compiled it it works perfect no matter what gtk engine. Glad other people could be helped as a result of my complaining
Btw I'm using the most current GNOME.

Well, I tried recompiling gtkpod with the appropriate options (not much different from my stock /etc/makepkg.conf) and it's still slow as molasses. My beloved Amarok 1.4 (big bloated KDE app that it is ) is waaaaaaaaaaay more effective! Ah well. I really would like gtkpod to work well! Amarok is a little overkill since I only use it for the ipods.

If your using it for a regular iPod not ipod touch or iphone you have more than a couple options i belive. With the itouch/iphone you can only use gtkpod
