I've been following the install guide for Arch on a friends computer, but I've hit a snag at the part where I configure Xorg. I'm installing on a Toshiba Tecra A1 which uses the Intel 82852 Chipset (http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel852gm/), so I installed the xf86-video-intel drivers (although I've tried the legacy drivers as well). Whenever I try to run the X server, it just hangs. I've tried both configuring Xorg input hotplugging, and disabling it, but neither works. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

A new version of xf86-video-intel got pushed to extra accidentally. Try to force un-install the package and I think it should work now since the repos have been updated.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I uninstalled the drivers, forced a refresh of the repositories, and reinstalled, but no such luck. The drivers I am using are xf86-video-intel 2.6.3-4, is this correct?

It could be that X is starting with a black cursor on a black background. Skip to this part of the Beginners Guide and see if xterm works.

That didn't work either.
When I used a minimalist Xorg.conf file the Xserver starts, the screen flickers as if the X server is starting, the blinking caret disappears for a moment, then it just falls back to the command line saying the X server has shut down.
When I used the one provided by `Xorg -configure`, it just flashes, then I see a non-blinking caret, and I can't do anything (Ctrl + Alt + Backspace does nothing, I can't switch to other virtual terminals, etc.).

Have you tried xf86-video-intel-legacy driver?

Have you given it a go with no xorg.conf, and let it work it's self out? Other than that try install svn/git versions from aur and see how that turns out.

Okay, I removed 'vga=773' from my grub, and tried starting the x server as root with no xorg.conf using the legacy drivers. I do get a basic X environment, but when I run xinit or startx as a non-root user, the X server crashes
"
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic
waiting for X server to shut down .error setting MTRR (base = 0xd8000000, size=0x08000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)
"
and when I look at /var/log/Xorg.o.log, I can't really tell which video driver it is actually using; it sets up four device/screen pair consisting of intel, i810, vesa, and fbdev drivers.

I seem to have fixed things. It seems that when I wrote ~/.xinitrc, I didn't save the changes, so things didn't work as a non-root user. As well, I installed hwd -xa to configure the Xorg.conf file. One of those worked.
